## Program

### The French Landscape Art Retreat
Join renowned artists Marc Dalessio and Tina Orsolic Dalessio for an immersive plein-air oil painting retreat in the sun-drenched countryside of Occitanie, southern France. Paint from life among medieval villages, river valleys, and the warm, generous light of the south, where every stretch of countryside and winding street offers a composition worth committing to canvas. Marc's personalized instruction guides you through the full process of creating a landscape painting, from selecting your spot to glazing a finished work.

This retreat will deepen your skills across the complete arc of oil landscape painting. All levels of experience are welcome. Under Marc and Tina's expert guidance, you'll go through the entire process of creating a landscape painting, from selecting the most inspiring outdoor spots and planning out a dynamic composition, to polishing and glazing your artwork.

Marc's approach is rooted in close observation and rigorous technique, with a focus on helping you read a landscape and respond to it with confidence. Working outdoors alongside fellow painters in a region this rich with subject matter accelerates everything. You will come away painting more decisively, seeing more clearly, and with a stronger sense of your own work.

**The topics covered during your classes with Marc include:**

- Exploring your materials for the best results
- Selecting an ideal spot for painting en plein air
- Preparing your workspace and setting up your materials
- Achieving a dynamic composition
- Experimenting with color theory
- A variety of painting techniques, and choosing them suitably to your subject
- The *“sight-size”* technique applied to painting en plein air
- The art and science of glazing
- ...and much more.

Your art trips will take you through some of the most paintable corners of the region. Spend a day in Albi, where red-brick towers rise above the Tarn and the warm stone architecture offers endless material. Work from the quiet riverside character of Lisle-sur-Tarn, and find your compositions among the varied landscapes in Castres and Toulouse.

Your accommodation for the retreat is a charming, restored estate in the countryside, offering the perfect backdrop for the next steps in your watercolor journey. By the end of the retreat, you will return home more confident, with a renewed artistic process and cherished memories!

### Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport and join the 3:00 PM transfer to your retreat venue. After settling into your room, take a moment to unwind and absorb the tranquil surroundings. Meet your fellow artists and get acquainted with Marc Dalessio and his wife, Tina Orsolic Dalessio.

As part of an orientation tour, explore the estate’s charming garden, the historic watchtower, and inviting communal spaces. In the evening, toast to the start of your creative journey with cocktails and bite-sized canapés, followed by a delicious three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and complemented by local French wines.

### Day 2: Art classes at the venue
Enjoy a refreshing breakfast and a warm cup of coffee in the morning before heading into the first workshop of the retreat. A check-in over coffee with Marc and Tina offers a warm opportunity to set goals and understand the day's schedule.

The morning class begins with Marc introducing the nuances of painting en plein air, demonstrating how to choose the perfect spot, set up a workspace, and plan a painting. During this immersive session, follow along with Marc's demonstrations, or ask questions if you need a more in-depth explanation. Marc and Tina will provide individual guidance, ensuring a personalized learning experience. After the demos, start your own landscape piece, inspired by the surrounding countryside of the Tarn.

After a leisurely lunch break, return to your classes in the afternoon. Develop your landscape piece further, depicting the rolling hills or the patchwork of sunlit agricultural fields on the horizon. Tina will offer bespoke guidance to beginner artists, while Marc will offer more nuanced advice to advanced painters. Regardless of your level, however, expect a hands-on session and plenty of new techniques to try.

As the day comes to an end, take some time to rest and reset before dinner. Stroll through the estate gardens, take a quick dip in the pool, or relax in your comfortable accommodation. Join Marc, Tina, and your fellow artists for a delightful three-course dinner prepared by the in-house chef and accompanied by a glass of fragrant wine.

### Day 3: Art trip to Castres
Kick off the day with a filling breakfast and a freshly brewed cup of coffee before setting out on the short drive to Castres, a charming town nicknamed the "Little Venice of Languedoc," for a morning of painting in the open air.

Once there, settle into your chosen spot along the banks of the River Agout, where the pastel-hued, half-timbered houses lean out over the water and their reflections shimmer on the surface below. With Marc at your side, continue developing the landscape piece you began the day before. He'll dive more thoroughly into composition, color mixing, and layering your painting correctly, sharing insights on capturing the essence of your natural surroundings as authentically as possible. Take your time and don't rush the process, letting each brushstroke lead you to the next.

After a relaxing lunch, the afternoon session with Marc and Tina emphasizes observing nature more closely, analyzing the landscape, and incorporating these observations into your painting. Drawing on the morning's discoveries along the river and the old town's timeworn facades, they'll guide you in adding final touches to your current piece while prepping approaches to carry into future works.

As you return, take time to unwind, whether by the pool chatting with fellow artists or simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings. Gather for a well-earned dinner accompanied by a glass of wine, reflecting on a day filled with creativity and inspiration.

### Day 4: Art trip to Lisle-sur-Tarn
On the fourth day of the retreat, the morning starts with a wholesome breakfast, setting the stage for a day filled with artistic adventure. Over coffee, Marc and Tina will check in with you, discussing goals and the day's exciting schedule.

The highlight of the day is a full-day art trip to Lisle-sur-Tarn, a beautifully preserved 13th-century bastide town a short drive away. Built around a vast central square surrounded by brick and half-timbered houses, the town has retained its original medieval charm. Here, under the guidance of Marc and Tina, you'll employ sight-sizing techniques to capture the town's diverse and painterly scenes, from the broad arc of the Tarn River to the vineyard-covered countryside rolling out beyond the old town walls. With the help of this technique, you'll be able to more accurately replicate the size and shape of natural elements directly onto the canvas.

After a lunch break, the afternoon is dedicated to continuing your painting, with Marc and Tina providing personalized support and tips to enhance your skills.

Back at the estate, take time to relax and reflect amidst the tranquil surroundings, perhaps taking a peaceful stroll through the gardens or unwinding by the pool. The day concludes with a chef-prepared three-course dinner accompanied by a selected glass of wine. Share your thoughts and your progress with your fellow artists and chat late into the night.

### Day 5: Art trip to Gaillac
Wake up to a generous breakfast before an informal coffee session with Marc and Tina to talk through the day's objectives and activities.

The morning art trip takes you to Gaillac, a historic town whose old quarter, vineyard-covered plateau, and warm ochre brickwork offer a rich variety of subjects for the plein air painter. Marc will delve deeper into refining techniques, focusing on aspects like light, shadow, and texture, enhancing the details in your landscape piece inspired by the unique environmental elements found around the town.

After a refreshing lunch break, the afternoon session back at the estate is reserved for more hands-on practice time, with Marc and Tina offering individual critiques and personalized guidance.

During your free time, explore the tranquil surroundings, perhaps enjoying a chat with your fellow artists or unwinding by the pool. If you'd like to stretch your legs, tune in with nature by taking a walk through the countryside at your own pace.

The day wraps up with a three-course dinner prepared by the chef, paired with a glass of wine, bringing a satisfying close to another full and inspiring day.

### Day 6: Art trip to Albi
Ease into the day with a nourishing breakfast and a sense of anticipation, then set out with Marc and Tina on a full-day trip to Albi. The one-hour drive becomes part of the experience as fields, vineyards, and villages slide past the windows, giving space for conversation and a gentle mental warm-up before the day's painting begins.

The morning centers on plein air painting throughout Albi, with the city's extraordinary architecture and warm southern light offering an exceptional subject. The Basilica of Saint Cecilia rises dramatically into view, its fortress-like brick exterior shifting in tone and texture as the light moves across it. Stop along the Pont Vieux bridge and work from the riverbanks, responding to the composition of water, stone, and sky. Marc and Tina will guide you in reading the scene and finding your entry point into it.

After a relaxing lunch, the afternoon is dedicated to adding final touches to your landscape piece, with Marc focusing on depth, contrast, and final color adjustments inspired by the day's surroundings. Tina will offer personalized guidance alongside, helping you to refine what is working and resolve what isn't. Together they'll support you in bringing the painting to a satisfying conclusion.

As you return to the venue, savor a flavorful three-course dinner prepared by the private chef, accompanied by a glass of French wine.

### Day 7: Art trip to Lautrec
Wake up to a generous breakfast and the excitement of a final full day ahead, before setting out with Marc and Tina for a morning trip to Lautrec, one of the most beautiful villages in France and the ancestral home of the very painter whose museum you visited in Albi.

Perched on a hilltop between Albi and Castres, Lautrec quite literally touches the sky, its steep cobblestone streets revealing panoramic views that stretch to the horizon. From the hill above the village, sweeping views take in patchwork fields, sunflower crops, and distant hilltops that stretch toward the Montagne Noire. It is rich material for a morning of glazing work. Under Marc and Tina's guidance, you'll practice glaze preparation and application, working through the essential glazing rules. You'll then get hands-on practice with individual guidance, building toward the final, polished state of your landscape piece.

After a relaxing lunch back at the venue, the afternoon is dedicated to a mini-exhibition in the gardens, a chance to display your work, celebrate progress, and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow artists. Participation is not obligatory, but the gallery showing is an excellent opportunity to give and receive constructive feedback from your peers and from Marc and Tina. By the end of the session, you'll have a finished landscape painting in hand, the tangible result of a week's work.

As the evening settles in, enjoy some quiet time before coming together for a three-course farewell dinner filled with great food and easy conversation. Raise a glass to the paintings you created, the landscapes that inspired them, and the friendships made along the way.

### Day 8: Departure
After enjoying a satisfying breakfast with Marc, Tina, and the group, it's time to bid farewell and exchange any last contact details. Prepare for your transfer to Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, scheduled for 10:00 AM, with an estimated arrival time of 11:00 AM.

From the start, UpTrek provided prompt, careful service that was carried right through to our arrival at the retreat. Communication is key, especially when travel is just getting going again, and Andra (the retreat coordinator) was always ready with a response. I really appreciated the sensible, yet friendly approach, as well as the clear policies that were upfront from the start. Meeting Ted (CEO of UpTrek) and Andra put faces to the business - this human touch adds value and reassurance. Sophie and Nicolas (the venue hosts) were charming, attentive hosts who looked after many needs. They served us tasty treats throughout the day, they kept us shaded and they helped find solutions when required. I wish we had 48 hours in which to enjoy each day even more. The venue was excellent. The setting was magical. I was very comfortable and there was plenty of space for a group of this size. The rooms were very clean and the use of laundry facilities was much appreciated. It was lovely to feel at ease to use the pool, the hot tub, the fridge, the common areas, and the grounds - after being cooped up for over two years, this was a wonderful physical release. Having access to a well-lit space for us to enjoy Sketchbook Night Club each night was the icing on the cake: we were able to keep making art, have some laughs and get to know one another better. I would highly recommend each component and hope to have the opportunity to travel this way again. This retreat was truly like a dream come true. I loved it. I thank each of you from the heart."
