## Program

### Creative Development and Writing Retreat
Join bestselling author Courtney Maum on a transformative creative development retreat on a countryside estate at the edge of the Cabo de Gata Nature Reserve in southern Spain. Across one week, Courtney will pair her dynamic craft classes with professional development workshops so you’ll leave writing better, pitching sharper, promoting your work with more confidence, and genuinely enjoying the process!

**Your retreat will kick off long before you land in Spain with a group Zoom and a private half-hour 1:1 call prior to the retreat, so by Day 1 Courtney will already know your work and your goals.**

Set out for not one, but two unforgettable Andalusian adventures! Your half-day in Almería begins with a guided exploration of La Alcazaba, one of Europe’s most beautifully preserved Moorish fortresses, followed by a delicious lunch and drinks at a beloved local eatery. Later in the week, you’ll have the chance to join a half-day trip to the stunning Cabo de Gata Natural Park, where you’ll travel along the rugged coastline and discover the charming seaside village of San José, enjoying a mouthwatering local lunch with breathtaking views.

To top it all off, our two open mic evenings promise a welcoming and supportive space for you to share your writing, whether it’s a fresh idea, an opening page, or something you crafted during the retreat.

**Some of the topics covered in your classes with Courtney include:**

- Improving your writing regardless of genre
- Learning how to navigate the business of publishing
- Solidifying your literary citizenship well beyond the retreat
- Writing book proposals that sell, across fiction and nonfiction alike
- Making personal nonfiction resonate with readers who don’t know you
- Building a platform that you actually enjoy showing up to
- Real-world time management and accountability tactics to sustain your practice
- Having fun and make new friends in sunny Spain!
- ...and many more!

This creative development retreat welcomes writers of all genres focused on craft and professional growth.

Nestled in the heart of Cabo de Gata Natural Park, your retreat venue is a peaceful oasis surrounded by the region's dramatic natural beauty. With its rustic charm, gardens brimming with native plants, and panoramic views of the rugged terrain, the estate offers endless sources of inspiration. Whether exploring its tranquil pathways or relaxing in the welcoming common areas, you’ll find the perfect setting to immerse yourself in your art and connect with your surroundings.

### Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Almería Airport (LEI) and catch your 3:30 PM transfer to the retreat venue, a short 30-minute journey. Settle into your comfortable room, take some time to relax, and get ready to meet Courtney Maum, your instructor for the week, as well as your fellow writers.

Join an orientation tour to explore the bright workshop space, peaceful gardens, inviting terraces, and refreshing pool. Over a delightful welcome dinner, enjoy a relaxed conversation about the week that’s ahead while savoring local Spanish flavors and a glass of fragrant wine.

### Day 2: Classes at the venue
Fuel up with a wholesome Andalusian breakfast and gather for a relaxed check-in with Courtney, who’ll walk you through the day ahead. Make your way to the sunlit studio for the very first class of the retreat.

The morning workshop will focus on one of the most important questions: "What Are We Writing?". Practice summarizing entire projects in a few words, namely loglines and query letters. Whether your manuscript is fully drafted or still taking shape, you’ll practice pulling the beating heart of your project onto a single elegant line, then scale it into a query letter that’ll earn the click. Courtney will bring real-world examples from her own six-book career, along with playful exercises to sharpen your pitch until it lands.

After a satisfying lunch, regroup for the afternoon class: "Who Are We As Writers?". The focus will shift to author bios and how yours can work across every platform you use, from your website’s about page to your query-letter sign-off. Courtney will guide you through positioning yourself honestly and memorably, so your bio pulls its weight whether an editor or a reader is doing the reading.

Wind down with a swim or a stroll through the gardens. Gather with your writing group as the sun slips behind the hills for a three-course dinner paired with wine.

### Day 3: Trip to Almería & drinks at a special establishment
Wake to a hearty breakfast, then settle in for a coffee check-in with Courtney, who’ll walk you through the morning’s adventure, a half-day trip to the historic heart of Almería.

A guided walk through Almería’s old town will immerse you in the dialogue between past and present. Head straight for La Alcazaba de Almería, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortresses in Europe, home to sprawling gardens, the imposing Tower of Mirrors, intricate stone gates, and sweeping panoramas of the city and the sea. Wrap up the morning with lunch and drinks at one of the city’s most charming local spots, a perfect slice of Andalusian hospitality.

Return to the venue in time to discuss "Where Will We Publish?". Courtney will lead hands-on exercises to help identify the topics you’re best positioned to write about, the audiences your work will resonate with, the angles that’ll earn real discoverability in 2027, and the publishing doors worth knocking on first.

As dusk settles, prepare to share your work at the first open mic session of the retreat. Enjoy the encouragement of a warm and supportive audience made up of fellow writers. Read a work-in-progress or a fresh scene you sketched earlier in the day; this is your moment to shine!

Afterward, relax and unwind with a delicious three-course dinner paired perfectly with wine to end the evening on a high note.

### Day 4: Classes at the venue
Enjoy yet another delicious breakfast of fresh Spanish pastries, seasonal fruit, homemade jam, and strong coffee, then settle in for a group check-in. This morning class will dive straight into the all-important opening of your story.

"Nail Your Story’s Opening" will cover strategies and tricks for capturing the reader’s attention from page one, along with the pacing moves that’ll keep a reader turning pages. Courtney will unpack the subtle difference between a premise and a plot, plus practical tips for weaving momentum and stakes into your manuscript so your book earns its real estate on the page.

After lunch, flip to the business side with "Book Proposals 101". In a casual and no-pressure lecture, Courtney will break down what book proposals actually are, the purpose they serve, why they’re worth understanding for every genre including fiction, and how to approach writing one for the manuscript on your desk. Expect real examples, plenty of myth-busting, a clearer sense of what agents and editors want to see, and a workflow to take home.

Unwind in the late afternoon with a stretch in the garden or a dip in the pool. Gather as evening arrives for a three-course dinner paired with wine, celebrating the midway point of the week.

### Day 5: Trip to Cabo de Gata Natural Park (optional)
Ease into the morning with breakfast and a quick check-in with Courtney, then pack your notebook and sun hat for today’s optional half-day adventure, a trip to the striking wilds of Cabo de Gata Natural Park.

This protected UNESCO Geopark will unfold in earthy tones, where rugged cliffs, rolling hills, flowering coastal shrubs, and ancient juniper stands paint an ever-shifting palette of color and light. Wander the sandy paths, breathe in the salt air, and stay open to whatever catches your eye. The route will wrap up in the seaside village of San José, where you’ll pause for a delicious lunch at a local Andalusian spot framed by the turquoise coast. If you’d rather spend the morning on-site, stay at the finca for solo writing hours instead.

After lunch, regroup at the venue for the afternoon class, "From the Personal to the Universal." Courtney will lead an honest discussion on how to make your personal nonfiction relevant to readers who don’t know you, a conversation equally useful for fiction writers who’ll be asked to write nonfiction pieces to boost their platform. Expect real prompts, a pair of short drafting exercises, plenty of space to workshop your work, and a fresh framework for finding universal notes in your own stories.

As evening falls, come together for a three-course dinner paired with wine, comparing notes from the coast.

### Day 6: Classes at the venue
Brew a strong coffee alongside another delectable breakfast, then settle into the studio for the most practical day of the week.

The morning class, "Building a Platform That You Actually Enjoy", will pick up where Day 3’s "Where Will We Publish?" exercise left off. Courtney will walk you through your worksheets together, then help each writer develop their findings individually, so you leave with a platform plan that feels genuinely true to you rather than the generic ‘build an audience’ advice the internet keeps recycling.

After lunch, pivot to "Newslettering in 2027". Do writers really need a newsletter? Which platform should you choose? What visual assets will make the thing soar? And how often should you actually send? Courtney will answer every question with the clarity of someone who grew her own Substack to 40,000 subscribers, and you’ll walk away with a concrete blueprint for starting or leveling up your own list!

As the sun drops low over the reserve, gather for another open mic session. Wrap the evening with a three-course dinner paired with wine.

### Day 7: Classes at the venue
Greet one more magical morning and, over breakfast with Courtney, share any last highlights and burning questions as you prepare for the final two classes of the week.

Dive into the morning’s class, "Tackling Time Management and Accountability". Courtney will gently guide you through simple, practical steps to help you find time for your writing amidst your busy life. Support each other and learn to create a personal plan that fits your real schedule and goals. You’ll leave feeling inspired, connected, and ready to keep moving forward with confidence!

After lunch, join everyone for a heartfelt group Q&A to close out the week’s classes. Courtney will answer any last questions before inviting you to celebrate together. Raise your glass to the friendships you’ve made, the new pages you’ve written, and the exciting journey ahead!

As dusk settles, gather one final time for a special farewell dinner, a sumptuous three-course feast paired with wine. Toast the week that was while soaking in the Andalusian stars.

### Day 8: Departure
Enjoy a light breakfast, bid farewell to Courtney and your fellow writers, and board the 10:00 AM transfer to Almería Airport (LEI). You'll reach your destination at around 10:30 AM.

Just a 30-minute trip brings you to the area’s most iconic beaches, such as Genoveses and Mónsul, both known for their golden sands, turquoise waters, and cinematic history. The park is renowned for its unique volcanic landscape, famous for its appearances in movies and TV series such as “Black Mirror”, "Game of Thrones" and "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. The uniqueness of the nature reserve also comes from the region’s rich history shaped by numerous cultures, including the Phoenicians, the Romans, and the Moors.

Its rugged cliffs drop dramatically into the sea, framing stretches of unspoiled beaches, wild coves, and charming fishing villages where time seems to have slowed. ## Reviews

**Testimonials from Courtney Maum's students:**

- “Our one-hour phonecall was literally more helpful than an entire MFA in how to construct a book.” - Jennifer Pollock

- "Working with Courtney felt like finding a life coach--for my writing life! She gave kind, clear-eyed, and honest feedback about the work at hand, helped me to see what I could not see myself, and as a bonus, sent me relevant and helpful reading recommendations throughout the entire process. I'd love to continue working with her as a literary personal trainer, adviser, and consultant from now on. In addition, I completed an MFA in creative writing many years ago, and I have not received this level of attention to and consideration for my work since then. For writers who might be considering an MFA program, but for whom the logistics of upending one's life to move across the country for a graduate program might not make sense, Courtney can provide the care and wisdom of a creative writing professor--no grad school loans required!" —Daisy Dodge

- “Working with Courtney was like making a dress and then later having someone reveal to you your own seams—a fascinating process. She's insightful, capable, and a total delight. I'd recommend her to anyone.” —writer, actor and director Bodine Boling

- “Courtney is a consummate professional. She is a beautiful writer who wants to help other writers find and expand their stories. She knows how to hone in on a story and expand it into a tale people want to read, bringing out the best, most sellable story for memoirists. That was my experience in working with her. I had a proposal that I thought was ready for pitching agents (it wasn’t), and not only did she help me identify what needed work and why, she also found that I was skipping over the biggest part of my story, watering down what should have been the defining moment in the “plot.” Her advice on the business of publishing is so helpful for those of us who have not published yet. And if you haven’t read her book, Before and After the Book Deal — you should!” —Mary Joan Cunningham

- “Self-promotion, even for talented writers, is one of the hardest jobs an author faces. For my debut novel, *Ever So Silent*, I wrote an insipid and lackluster pitch. I knew it when I read it, and, after multiple rewrites, I couldn't seem to make it better. That's when I turned to Courtney. With a fresh eye, she transformed my pitch into something truly special. Now, it entices. Now it has all the seductiveness a novel's pitch needs. Courtney has a special gift for marketing any author would be making a mistake not to use. How's this for her closer? "A bustling thriller with a whip-smart female protagonist, Little’s debut offers moxie and menace on every page." —Christopher Little

- “I reached out to Courtney after I realized that my query and first pages weren't getting requests from agents. I thought I had a strong query, so I suspected that my first pages were the issue. Courtney not only confirmed my suspicions but offered a thorough and considered evaluation of my first pages. She diagnosed problems that went beyond the opening chapter of my novel and helped me think about characterization, tone, and POV issues in a new light. Her feedback not only helped me rewrite my opening, but also showed me a new lens through which I was able to make another round of revisions on my manuscript. Before Courtney read my submission packet, I had workshopped both my query and opening pages with fellow writers countless times, but Courtney's smart and incisive critique helped me think about my book in a new, necessary way. Her feedback was well worth the investment. To be honest, it was kind of a bargain. I couldn't recommend her highly enough.” —Katy H-S

- “My 1-on-1 consult was everything I had hoped for and much more! We covered a ridiculous amount of ground in an hour, and Courtney’s advice was both illuminating and thought-provoking. Seriously, I’d spent the prior week in a very productive mini-crisis debating my way forward, including exiting the crazy publishing industry altogether. Ultimately, our chat and my internal re-evaluation have left me fortified as I re-commit to my writing path. I look forward to connecting and engaging with Courtney in the future!” —writer and former gymnast Kristine Campbell

UpTrek provides wooden laptop and writing stands for bed, lamps in each room, tables and chairs, a projector, TV screen, printer–scanner, power outlets and extension cords, high-speed wireless Internet throughout the estate, a Bluetooth speaker, and foldable outdoor chairs.

**How many people are to be expected on the retreat?**

There is a maximum number of 16 participants.

**Do I need a visa?**

Guests traveling from the US, Canada, UK, EU, and/or Schengen member states may enter Spain for tourist purposes without a visa or travel authorization. Please contact us for further guidance.

**Is there a local currency I should acquire before arriving?**

Please take out euros cash from an ATM at the airport, in Almería, or in Níjar (the closest town to the retreat venue). You will need cash for small purchases in town and for tipping the staff (tipping is customary). The retreat venue doesn't have a card machine but accepts euros cash.

**Can a non-participating guest join me?**

We do not accommodate non-participants at our retreats. This policy is in place to ensure the creative and immersive nature of our retreats remains intact for all participants.

**Are there any age restrictions?**

No restrictions whatsoever. Please keep in mind that you must be 18 years of age to travel independently.

**Is the retreat available to guests with limited mobility?**

Unfortunately, the retreat venue and trips are not well suited to host people with limited mobility. The trips involve plenty of walking on uneven terrain across the nature reserve. You will also need to walk between the accommodation spaces, the studio, and the main building where meals are served.

**What language is used during the workshops and other activities?**

The retreat is available in English.

**What happens if I need to cancel?**

Once the retreat is guaranteed, all payments are final and nonrefundable. Bookings are nonrefundable under any circumstances. Participants are required to purchase travel, medical, and cancellation insurance for protection against any circumstances that might require cancellation or change of travel arrangements. After your payment is processed, you may purchase insurance through the following link: [Purchase insurance](https://uptrek.com/protect-your-trip). Please review our [cancellation policy.](https://uptrek.com/cancellation-policy)

**Do I need travel insurance?**

Yes. Since all bookings are nonrefundable, travel insurance is mandatory for all UpTrek travelers. Participants are required to purchase travel, medical, and cancellation insurance for protection against any circumstances that might require cancellation or change of travel arrangements. We strongly advise that your chosen policy provides cover against lost or delayed baggage, loss of personal belongings, trip cancellation, trip interruption, accidents, illness, injury, medical expenses, death, and emergency repatriation.

**Do I have to pay a deposit?**

No. Once the number of guest reservations reaches the minimum number required for the retreat to become guaranteed, UpTrek charges the guests the cost of the retreat. Guests who reserved will be notified 48 hours in advance that their payment method on file is about to be charged.

**Will I receive a full refund if the retreat is not guaranteed?**

UpTrek does not charge the payment method we collect until the retreat becomes guaranteed. Once the retreat is guaranteed, there will be no reimbursement. Participants are required to purchase travel, medical, and cancellation insurance for protection against any circumstances that might require cancellation or change of travel arrangements.

**Will I receive a full refund if the guaranteed retreat is canceled by the artist or by UpTrek?**

If the retreat is canceled due to force majeure events or circumstances out of UpTrek's and/or the instructor's control, UpTrek will let you know as soon as possible, refund the total cost of the retreat, and help you find another option for your vacation.
