# Froyle Davies
*Mixed media artist and teacher*

Froyle Davies is a mixed media artist and teacher based in Aotearoa, New Zealand. After spending most of her life in Australia, she returned to her home in New Zealand and began discovering her birth family, her whakapapa, and parts of herself she had never fully understood. That journey reshaped both her life and her art, reminding her that creativity is about far more than making beautiful art. It is about discovering your own voice, building confidence, and expressing who you truly are.

Froyle has been painting and exhibiting for more than thirty years. Her work is known for vibrant color, movement, and richly layered texture, exploring themes of hope, identity, and transformation through expressive mark-making. Her collection "The Journey Home" deals with identity, telling the story of finding family and exploring culture, including pieces inspired by her Māori heritage and the shifting turquoise, green, and violet of paua shell, which for her captures the spirit of Aotearoa. Her work has also been featured in Aotearoa New Zealand Artist Magazine.

Froyle is especially loved for her work with gel plate printing and collage. Through the FroyleArt Creative Academy and her classes on Skillshare, she teaches a wide range of mixed media techniques, from making your own collage papers with affordable materials and image transfers with gel plate printing to creating a mixed media portrait with no drawing required, adding texture with paints, inks, pastes, and gels, and developing a cohesive series of artworks. In her latest work, she moves beyond printing and into painting with the gel plate, transforming prints into large-scale finished canvases.

At the heart of Froyle's teaching is the belief that creativity is something we all possess, and sometimes it simply needs encouragement, practical guidance, and the freedom to experiment. Whether students are just beginning or returning to art after many years, she helps them build their skills, trust their instincts, and enjoy every step of the creative process. As she puts it, "Great art is about discovering what you're capable of along the way."
