Sculpting vacation

Learn how to carve your own stone block from scratch under a professional sculptor's guidance, enjoy tasty authentic Umbrian meals, stay in a charming country-house surrounded by nature and wilderness, and explore the stunning Perugia region.

Your tutor, sculptor Wolfgang Sandt, will guide you throughout the week to help you thrive on patience and determination and boost your endurance and precision. He will counsel you to choose your desired project or adjust it to approachable ideas, as well as assure that you receive the encouragement and support you need to finish your project.

This sculpting vacation is designed to enrich you with the cultural tradition and gastronomy of Umbria. You will enjoy authentic Umbrian meals and take a full day trip to archaeological sites and a museum, right in the heart of the Etruscan culture that lingers in the area.

For the duration of the sculpting vacation, you will stay in a peaceful oasis, 'Villa La Rogaia' — set at the crossing point of serenity and nature's wilderness. Far away from civilization and recklessness, you will befriend the surrounding area's wildlife and perhaps get to know the two semi-domesticated foxes that patronize the property alongside the 'Villa La Rogaia' cats.

In between the sculpting sessions, spend time wandering in the olive groves, woodlands and gardens of 'Villa La Rogaia' decorated with flower paths, blooming shrubs, and Wolfgang Sandt's marble sculptures. Relax by the property' pool, sunbathe on your private terrace with tranquil views of the Umbrian hills, and take a refreshing massage to disconnect.

Wolfgang Sandt
Artist, art tutor

Your sculpting instructor throughout the vacation will be Wolfgang Sandt, master stonemason, sculptor and painter. With over 20 years of experience as an artist and art tutor, having participated in many international exhibitions, there aren’t any mysteries that marble, limestone or other stones can hide from him. Wolfgang Sandt's masterpieces might be abstract or artistic objects for daily use, but either way, they impress with lively and airy textures. Wolfgang Sandt will walk you through a stimulating sculpting journey. He will provide individual guidance during all sculpting sessions and by the end of the vacation you will be able to asses your progress, regardless of your previous sculpting experience or lack thereof.

Savan, US:

"As a nearly 74-year-old woman, I was not sure if I was up to learning how to sculpt marble. However, it had been a bucket list item for years. I was very pleased I selected 'La Rogaia' for my class experience. The accommodation was very comfortable with few distractions from learning this art form. Wolfgang is to be commended for his patience and skill with teaching beginners how to learn the basics and more during the short week we had. Most classes of this type elsewhere are 2 weeks in length. We did have full days of work in order to complete our projects. All we needed was available on this beautiful property in Umbria. I reached my goal of learning the tools and techniques thanks to Wolfgang..."

Giorgio, Germany:

"Arrival at La Rogaia: After breathtaking views over the lake and the surrounding hills on the way. A really nice place. One recognizes immediately: Here live art-loving people. Sculptures on the whole area, carefully landscaped plantings, aesthetic interior design… (and just as a side note, even the physical well-being is cared for excellently). The next morning we meet under the sunscreen of the sculptor's workplace. The view into the landscape, the surroundings are inspiring. We are only a small group – pleasant. Wolfgang has put every stone on a working bench made to our specifications (he had also asked our heights because of the correct working height), tells us of his career as a sculptor, and about sculpture… Then it starts! No, not with the stone! With the tools! Everyone got their own set in a wooden box marked with their name and, although brand new, the irons* have to be sharpened. Wolfgang demonstrates first how to do it, then we do it, under his guidance. Wolfgang is always there, explains, demonstrates... and you can feel: for him it is fun to convey his knowledge! So he is always present in all those days... and on some days when we arrive in the morning or return from our lunch break, he has already spent quite a while on the workplace, thinking about the individual works and sharing his suggestions with us."

Gudrun, Germany:

"The days with you were beautiful and carefree for us. We have brought many beautiful memories into our everyday life."

Gabi, Germany:

"I still like to think back to the days, it was a nice piece of work and not only did we have fun with good and persistent instructions, but we also did a lot of training: the close look, the deep breath and the tireless removal until you get to the actual shape..."

Gisèle, Canada:

"Dear Annette and Wolfgang, greetings from Canada. We enjoyed our stay at La Rogaia and meeting Wolfgang and your staff as well as other guests. The stay was very restful and we found the accommodations tasteful and simple. Thank you for the welcome gifts... We are still finishing the apricot marmalade, which is delicious!"
