## Program

### Your Turn to Create Retreat
Experience a transformative art retreat with artist and art teacher Kaitlyn Edington on the sunny island of Zakynthos. This retreat is designed especially for art teachers and educators looking to step back into their own creative practice, breaking through whatever block stands in the way, and rediscovering what it feels like to make art purely for yourself. Across sketchbook studies, still life, landscapes, architecture, and figures, you'll build a lightweight, travel-friendly practice using watercolor, gouache, and mixed media. Under Kaitlyn's guidance, you'll explore quick observational drawing and painting, learning to capture the world around you wherever you happen to be sitting: a dining room table, a hillside, or a boat off the coast of Zakynthos.

Paint your way across Zakynthos, letting each place dictate a different visual language and pace of looking. In Zante Town, a trip unfolds among arcades, balconies, harbor masts, and worn pastel walls shaped by Venetian and Byzantine history. Bells, footsteps, and moving shadows keep the page alive. Then, a boat ride carries you to Navagio Beach. From high above the electric blue cove, create large shapes while wind and glare simplify the scene in bold contrast. The stranded hull becomes an anchor for composition as cliffs curve around it.

At an award-winning olive oil farm established in 1890, work among trees older than most buildings you have known, some over 1500 years old. The olive oil tasting that follows deepens your sense of place, linking flavor, scent, and memory to what you painted. At a Zakynthos horse farm, movement replaces stillness. Try your hand at quick studies of the horses and ponies, merging landscape and anatomy into a single painted moment.

By the end of the retreat, you will have filled your sketchbook with a body of work that reflects both the island around you and a renewed, sustainable connection to your own art practice. The retreat is open to all levels of experience.

**The topics covered during your lessons with Kaitlyn include:**

- Breaking through creative blocks and rediscovering the joy of making art for yourself
- Creating simple, travel-friendly sketchbook compositions on the go
- Capturing still lifes, landscapes, architecture, figures, and daily life through quick observational drawing and painting
- Using watercolor, gouache, and mixed media in a lightweight, approachable way that lets you paint while you travel, whether you're sitting at a dining room table or overlooking a vineyard
- Telling stories through art, collage, words, and memory-keeping techniques
- Letting go of perfectionism and rebuilding a joyful, sustainable art practice that fits into your day-to-day life
- Exploring mixed media
- Building confidence in a sustainable sketchbook practice
- ...and many more!

The venue, a Greek villa perched on a hill with sweeping views of the sea, will be your creative home for the retreat. The sea-facing Shala art studio comes equipped with tables, chairs, easels, and professional studio lights, with plenty of space to spread out and paint. Sit down each evening to three-course dinners prepared by your private chef and paired with local wine, and enjoy water, coffee, tea, juices, and snacks available throughout the day.

Please note: The retreat venue is located on terraced grounds, with access to the studio, common areas, and accommodations requiring the use of stairways. The beach can be reached by descending a steep stairway of approximately 50 meters (164 feet). Additionally, the trips involve moderate walking, so this retreat may not be ideal for those with limited mobility.

### Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Zakynthos Airport for your 3:30 PM transfer to a breathtaking seafront venue overlooking the Mediterranean.

Settle into your elegant room and take a moment to unwind before joining a guided tour of the venue grounds. Discover the inviting pool, the shala art studio, and the inviting common areas. Meet your lovely instructor for the retreat, Kaitlyn Edington, as well as your fellow artists.

As the evening winds down, savor a delightful three-course welcome dinner in a warm and lively atmosphere. Enjoy a glass of wine with Kaitlyn and the group, and chat about the adventures ahead.

### Day 2: Art classes at the venue
The day begins with breakfast together, coffee in hand and the Ionian Sea in full view.

After a morning check-in with Kaitlyn and the group, you'll spend the first session in your sketchbook, with plenty of room to play and explore. There's no pressure to get things "right" here, just space to loosen up and see what happens on the page. You'll move into some color exploration, getting a feel for how pigments behave and interact, before settling into a still life drawing session to sharpen your eye for form and observation.

In the afternoon, you'll take your sketchbook out around the venue, finding new corners and views to capture as you go. It's a chance to keep building on the morning's momentum in a more relaxed, wandering way, letting the surroundings shape what ends up on the page. By the time the sun sets, your sketchbook will be filling up nicely.

The early evening is yours to spend however you like: keep working in the studio, take a dip in the infinity pool, wander down to Bouka Beach, or simply lounge in the gardens with a good conversation. You'll come together again for a chef-made dinner with a glass of local wine to close out the day.

### Day 3: Boat trip to Navagio Beach
Start your morning with a refreshing breakfast, then travel to Porto Vromi. Today you'll set sail for one of the island's most mysterious places.

Navagio Beach, known locally as Smugglers Cove, is one of those places that genuinely lives up to its reputation. Enclosed by sheer white limestone cliffs and accessible only by sea, the cove is home to the rusting hull of the MV Panagiotis, a cargo ship that ran aground under circumstances that have never been fully resolved. The most persistent story is that it was smuggling contraband and fled a Greek Navy pursuit straight into a storm. You'll take it all in from the boat, sketching if the mood strikes or simply taking reference photos to bring back with you.

After time spent exploring, sail back to Porto Vromi, where a shuttle will take you back to the venue for a well-earned lunch.

Then, head into another afternoon session. With the morning's sights still fresh, you'll dive into a guided lesson inspired by the trip, learning how to capture the breathtaking seascapes you have seen today. Kaitlyn will guide you through capturing the crystalline Greek waters onto your sketchbook, building confidence in your painting skills.

Soak up the last of the afternoon sun by the pool before gathering with Kaitlyn and your fellow artists for a three-course dinner prepared by your private chef and paired with local wine, sharing reference photos and stories from a morning at sea.

### Day 4: Art trip to an olive oil farm with olive oil tasting
Settle in with a warm breakfast and a morning cup of coffee, then gather your materials for a half-day art trip to one of the island's most storied working farms.

Established in 1890 and home to olive trees over 1,500 years old, this award-winning olive oil estate is a quietly extraordinary place. You'll wander among the ancient groves, with plenty of opportunity to paint and sketch on location, and finish with an olive oil tasting experience.

Back at the venue, enjoy lunch prepared by your private chef before the afternoon session. With the morning's groves still fresh in mind, Kaitlyn will walk you through a guided lesson inspired by the trip. Learn how to create a still life or a beautiful floral composition. Or practice figure drawing, bringing your artistic vision to life and capturing the essence of today's trip on your sketchbook pages.

Unwind by the pool or on the terraced gardens, then gather for a three-course dinner prepared by your private chef and paired with local wine, sharing your paintings of ancient olive trees as the Greek sunset spills across the sea.

### Day 5: Art trip to Zante Town
After breakfast and a morning check-in with Kaitlyn and your fellow artists, you'll set out for Zante Town, the island's gorgeous capital. You will soon learn why the Venetians lovingly named the island "The Flower of the East".

May is a beautiful time to visit Zante. The roadsides and old quarter are still lush with spring blooms, from wild orchids and sea lavender to the orange blossom that scents the air across the island. During this half-day art trip, you'll paint and sketch on location, drawing from life as you take in the urban scenes around you. As you explore the winding streets, you'll start sketches that you can build on later in the studio, and feel free to collect whatever catches your eye along the way: leaves, petals, anything you want to bring back with you.

Return to the venue for a nourishing lunch prepared by your private chef, then head into the studio for another afternoon class. With the morning's sketches as a starting point, the afternoon session moves into a guided painting lesson, focusing on figure drawing, seascapes, still life, or floral compositions. Look back through your sketches from the morning and allow the beauty of Zante to inspire your next creation.

Unwind as you wish during the late afternoon, then sit down to a three-course dinner prepared by your private chef and paired with local wine. Share your discoveries from Zante with the rest of the group and enjoy the lovely company of your fellow artists.

### Day 6: Art trip to a Zakynthos horse farm
Ease into the day with a relaxed breakfast, letting the peaceful rhythm of the morning ground you.

Morning light will set the pace for a lively painting and sketching session at the farm. Step into the traditional horse farm and capture the movement of Zakynthian horses and ponies raised on site, working on location as the scene shifts around you. Use fences, halters, buckets, stable doors, and trampled grass as ready-made structures for composition, and let the sketches you start here carry through into the afternoon.

Return to the venue for a light lunch, then continue the afternoon with another a guided session. With the morning's sketches as a starting point, the lesson settles into whichever subject feels right: figure drawing, seascapes, still life, or floral compositions. Refine brushwork, color choices, and composition, capturing the beautiful horses and ponies from the today's trip.

Spend the rest of the evening as you wish. Wander the venue grounds, take a swim in the pool, catch the sunset on the nearby beach, or take a moment to reflect on your experience on the retreat so far. Enjoy a flavorful three-course dinner prepared by the in-house chef, complemented by aromatic wine.

### Day 7: Art classes at the venue
Gather for breakfast and a morning check-in with Kaitlyn and the group, then settle into the studio for the final session of the week.

The morning is dedicated to figure-drawing practice, a focused close to the week's work, sharpening observation and technique one last time before the retreat wraps up. Kaitlyn will be there to offer help and support if needed.

Enjoy a delicious lunch, then gather with Kaitlyn and the group for a celebratory mini-exhibition: a chance to lay out your work from the week, take it all in, and celebrate how far you've come. Kaitlyn will share her final notes, giving you warm encouragements and feedback on how to take your practice beyond this retreat. This will be a moment to reflect, share, and feel proud of what you've made.

The farewell dinner is a proper celebration. Your private chef will have prepared a special menu, you'll raise a glass of local wine, and you'll end the evening with a live Greek dance show and band. A fitting send-off for a week of creativity, new friendships, and a little bit of magic.

### Day 8: Departure
Enjoy one last breakfast with Kaitlyn and your fellow artists, then get ready for your transfer to Zakynthos Airport (ZTH). Check-out is at 10:00 AM, and you'll arrive at the airport at around 10:30 AM.

- "Well it was lovely in all aspects! David’s gourmet food was a dining extravaganza! The quaint villa & the nearby town were enormously refreshing. The love & care put into the service was above reproach! I would highly suggest this venue to anyone interested in seeing Greece!"

- "The hosts really made my trip special by their loving and kind hearts! They made me feel like family as well as all their staff! The estate was breathtaking and I hope to visit again soon! It was magical and I truly appreciate everything done for us while there, their openness and especially the hugs! I miss them and the warm generosity and kindness. It's true that I felt more at ease, comfortable and hugged being a stranger welcomed there, than I actually do coming back home...!!! That is saying a lot about the character and hearts of Karen and David! It reflected in everything and everyone whom works there. That is why it works so well, as David says, that's Living, doing what you love! Thank you to all for the fond memories ;)"

- "The venue is beautiful. Waking up to see the sunrise was a perfect way to start the day. Food was authentic and delicious. We had some hot days in the studio, but apparently, this was a heat wave, but otherwise, it worked well. Staff was genuinely sweet and accommodating, and hard working. It was interesting to experience the Greek way of life. Our hosts cared about every detail. I enjoyed it so much that I will return next year and bring my daughter. Uptrek, thank you for finding this gem!"

- "Beautiful location! There was a lovely mix of art classes at the retreat, and excursions to paint or take reference photos! Our hosts were warm, kind, and very talented in cooking and treating guest! Thank you for an experience of a lifetime!"
