Pack your bags and curiosity, and prepare for a women-only art retreat with artist Nicki Traikos that invites you to discover just how fun and freeing watercolor can be. Set at a historic manor estate in County Monaghan of Ireland, this retreat will help you rediscover the joy and beauty of watercolor, spanning over florals, landscapes, and abstract painting.

The retreat is open to all levels of experience. Nicki's approach to teaching is all about making watercolor enjoyable and approachable, leaning into the right things to practice while guiding you in person with warmth and encouragement. Through daily sessions, you will build your skills from the very foundations of watercolor, moving through brush control, water-to-paint ratio, color mixing, and value studies before branching into landscape composition, loose botanicals, abstract painting, and personal creative expression. Paint with confidence and bring forward your personality and artistic style into your work, with Nicki right there beside you offering personalized feedback every step of the way.

Beyond the studio, explore Ireland on two exciting trips that will fuel your creativity. Head to the shores of Lough Muckno, the largest lake in County Monaghan, where acres of mature woodland open onto still, dark water dotted with wooded islands. Later in the retreat, spend a full day at Castle Leslie, a 1,000-acre estate of ancient woodland and lakeside landscapes with a Victorian Walled Garden, before wandering the colorful Georgian streets of Glaslough Village with your sketchbook in hand.

**The topics covered during your classes with Nicki include:**

- Exploring watercolor fundamentals, including brush control and water-to-paint ratio
- Building custom color palettes inspired by the Irish landscape and botanicals
- Painting loose, expressive botanicals drawn from local flora
- Creating contour sketches and using still-life references with confidence
- Studying landscape composition, perspective, and structure
- Developing depth, light, and movement across a range of subjects
- Strengthening your painting practice through guided feedback and support
- Working across a variety of projects, from small studies to finished pieces
- ...and many more!

Your venue for this retreat is one of Ireland's rare continuously family-held manor estates, with roots reaching back to 1651 and the same family in residence since the 1730s. The entire property is rented solely for this retreat. Located in the peaceful countryside of County Monaghan, the estate spans hundreds of acres of heritage woodland and private lakes, with formal parterre gardens framing the house.

Your classes will take place in a spacious art studio, and in-between sessions you can wander the walking trails or unwind in the sauna. Immerse yourself in Irish hospitality with chef-made meals and a traditional afternoon tea event, complete with a tiered display of savory bites and hand-crafted sweets.

### Day 1: Arrival
Land at Dublin Airport Airport (DUB) and hop on the 2:00 PM transfer to the venue. Once there, unpack and unwind in your cozy room. Settle in, then meet lovely artist Nicki Traikos, your instructor for the week, as well as your art group.

Join a delightful tour of the historic manor, ancient woodlands, and elegant common spaces. As dusk settles, gather with your fellow participants for a delectable welcome dinner, each bite enhanced by a glass of wine.

### Day 2: Art classes at the venue
Enjoy a hearty breakfast and a freshly brewed cup of coffee, then gather with your fellow artists for a morning check-in before heading into your first creative session of the retreat.

Nicki will open with introductions and an overview of the course structure, walking you through the topics and techniques you will explore over the coming days. Dive right into watercolor as Nicki guides you through the basics, from the balance between water and pigment to brush control and color mixing. Learn what your brushes can do and experiment with wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques under Nicki's encouraging guidance, building the confidence you will carry through every session ahead.

After a nourishing lunch, return to the studio for another afternoon workshop. During this class, you will create some color and value studies drawn from the local flora and surrounding views, using the Irish landscape and native plant life as your starting point. Learn brush control to create stunning leaves and florals, and experiment with different color palettes. Nicki will also provide sketching and reference photo tips to help you prepare for the next day's exciting trip.

As the class comes to an end, take some time to unwind before dinner. Gather for a delicious three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with a glass of wine, sharing first impressions of the retreat with Nicki and your fellow artists.

### Day 3: Art trip to Lough Muckno
Kick off the day with a wholesome breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, then gather your sketchbook and camera for an exciting trip to Lough Muckno, the largest lake in County Monaghan.

Head out to the shores of the lake, where acres of mature woodland open onto still, dark water dotted with wooded islands. Spend the morning exploring Lough Muckno, taking in the reflections on the water and the natural forms around you as you gather reference photos or make quick sketches to use back at the studio.

Return to the venue for a satisfying meal, then head into the studio for an afternoon of painting. Under Nicki's gentle guidance, you will work from your morning sketches and reference photos, putting color down on paper as you develop landscape studies inspired from the trip. Explore thumbnail compositions and color palette exercises inspired by the views you captured, translating the morning's inspiration into beautiful watercolor pieces.

As the evening approaches, gather with Nicki and your fellow artists for a delightful three-course dinner prepared by the in-house chef and paired with a glass of wine, sharing sketchbook pages and stories from the morning's trip.

### Day 4: Art classes at the venue
Start the day with a delicious breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, followed by a brief morning check-in before heading into a new day of creation.

The morning will focus on abstracting and painting loose, expressive landscape pieces. Nicki will guide you through working with watercolor in a freer, more experimental way, exploring how value, color, composition, and movement come together harmoniously. Draw on the reference photos from your trips or get inspired by the venue surroundings, using thumbnail sketches to play with the arrangement and mood of your composition.

After a filling lunch, return to the studio for a deeper dive into structure and painting exercises. Continue developing your landscape works, with a focus on color and value, refining technique and growing your skills. Nicki will move through the room offering personalized feedback, helping you strengthen the work you have started and push your paintings further.

Take some time to rest and unwind in the late afternoon. Join Nicki and your fellow creatives for a flavorful three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with a glass of fragrant local wine.

### Day 5: Art trip to Castle Leslie and Glaslough Village
Fuel up with a generous breakfast before gathering your sketchbook and supplies and heading into another exciting adventure: a full-day trip to Castle Leslie and the nearby Glaslough Village.

Spend the morning at Castle Leslie, a 1,000-acre estate of ancient woodland and lakeside landscapes with a Victorian Walled Garden. Wander the grand grounds with your sketchbook, sketching and gathering reference photos of the lakeside views and heritage gardens around you.

After a relaxed lunch on your own at the estate, head to Glaslough Village, one of the prettiest villages in Ireland. Explore the colorful Georgian streets with your sketchbook in hand, capturing the picturesque architecture and atmosphere of this charming Irish village.

As the day winds down, return to the venue and take some time to recharge before dinner. Join Nicki and the group for a tasteful three-course dinner prepared by the in-house chef and accompanied by a glass of wine, sharing sketchbook pages and discoveries from the day.

### Day 6: Art classes at the venue
Settle in with a satisfying breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, ready for a full day immersed in botanicals with watercolor on your mind and the Irish gardens right outside the studio windows.

Dive into capturing graceful botanicals in watercolor as Nicki guides you through assembling and developing loose floral compositions inspired by the surrounding gardens. Work through contour drawing exercises and still-life studies to build your confidence and precision, and explore expressive brushwork and water-to-paint ratio through color palette studies as you practice techniques for creating depth and movement in your florals. Embrace the fluid nature of watercolor and enjoy watching your botanicals come alive on paper.

After a leisurely lunch, continue building on your earlier studies by translating smaller compositions into more detailed paintings. Refine form and color as you develop your work, with emphasis on watercolor's fluid qualities and personal expression. Nicki will be there to support you in integrating your preferred elements and help you bring your artistic vision to life.

Spend the rest of the afternoon unwinding, then gather for a chef-prepared three-course dinner accompanied by a glass of fragrant wine, riding the energy of a day spent deep in florals and color.

### Day 7: Art classes at the venue
Savor a warm breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee, ready to soak up every last moment of the retreat together with Nicki and your fellow artists.

The morning will bring two painting ideas to choose from, giving you the freedom to follow whichever direction excites you the most. Dive into refining and completing your paintings, pulling together everything you have explored over the course of the retreat. Nicki will answer questions and talk through ideas for continuing your artistic growth at home, from building a consistent painting routine to finding inspiration in your everyday surroundings.

After a relaxed lunch, gather with Nicki for one-on-one feedback on your work. Then comes one of the most rewarding moments of the retreat: a celebratory mini-exhibition where you and your fellow artists will display your finished paintings side by side. As you walk through each other's work, celebrate each other's creative breakthroughs and the amazing range of perspectives that have emerged from the same Irish landscape.

As evening falls, it is time to celebrate you. Put on something special (make sure to pack a lovely outfit!) and gather for a farewell dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with wine. Raise a glass to the art you have created and the friendships you are taking home, knowing you are leaving Ireland a more confident and expressive painter than when you arrived.

### Day 8: Departure

For ease of travel across the 400 acres, a staff-driven golf cart is on hand to transport guests between the Gatelodge and the Manor.

Outdoors, there are walks across the grounds and wild swimming in the freshwater lake. A wood-fired sauna sits on a private pebble beach at the water's edge. ## Getting There

The venue for your retreat with Nicki Traikos is a majestic 17th-century heritage Irish manor estate, hidden away in the rolling drumlins of County Monaghan, Ireland. This "undiscovered" region is a landscape of ancient secrets and artistic legacy, just minutes from the historic town of Clones, famous for its intricate lace-making tradition and monastic ruins, including a well-preserved 10th-century Round Tower. The area is steeped in a rich literary history, serving as the muse for the poet Patrick Kavanagh, whose verses immortalized these very stony grey soils and mist-covered hills.

The manor estate itself is a fully enclosed, 400-acre sanctuary, celebrated as one of Ireland’s most romantic and secluded domains. Its grounds are a living tapestry of heritage woodlands, sweeping meadows, and grounds that have been cultivated by the same family for three centuries. Majestic oaks and towering beech trees form cathedral-like canopies over the walking paths, while the estate’s two private freshwater lakes offer a mirror-like stillness perfect for wild swimming or relaxation. As you sketch by the water’s edge, you might spot kingfishers flashing blue across the surface or red squirrels darting through the canopy.

Guests traveling from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the EU may enter Ireland for tourist purposes without a visa. If your flight connects through the UK (e.g., London Heathrow), you generally do not need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if your layover is under 24 hours and you do not pass through border control. However, we strongly recommend confirming your specific transit requirements [here](https://www.gov.uk/uk-border-control/layovers-and-transiting). **Please contact us for further guidance.**

**Is there a local currency I should acquire before arriving?**

The currency is the Euro (€). Credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted throughout Ireland, including in local towns like Clones, and for most services at the venue. Make sure you notify your bank that you'll be using your card in Ireland.

However, we recommend carrying some cash for smaller local pubs, taxis, or small purchases in rural shops. ATMs are available in Clones town and at the airport. Tipping is customary in Ireland.

**Are there any age restrictions?**

There are no restrictions whatsoever. Please keep in mind that you must be 18 years of age to travel independently.

**Is the retreat available to guests with limited mobility?**

Unfortunately, the retreat venue and trips are not well suited for people with limited mobility. The trips involve plenty of walking on uneven streets. Getting around the accommodation spaces, the studio, and the relaxation areas requires a short walk and climbing stairs.

**What language is used during the workshops and other activities?**

The retreat is available in English.

**What happens if I need to cancel?**

Once the retreat is guaranteed, all payments are final and nonrefundable. Bookings are nonrefundable under any circumstances. Participants are required to purchase travel, medical, and cancellation insurance for protection against any circumstances that might require cancellation or change of travel arrangements. After your payment is processed, you may purchase insurance through the following link: [Purchase insurance](https://uptrek.com/protect-your-trip). Please review our [cancellation policy.](https://uptrek.com/cancellation-policy)

**Do I need travel insurance?**

Yes. Since all bookings are nonrefundable, travel insurance is mandatory for all UpTrek travelers. Participants are required to purchase travel, medical, and cancellation insurance for protection against any circumstances that might require cancellation or change of travel arrangements. We strongly advise that your chosen policy provides cover against lost or delayed baggage, loss of personal belongings, trip cancellation, trip interruption, accidents, illness, injury, medical expenses, death, and emergency repatriation.

For your convenience, UpTrek is affiliated with Allianz Travel and is a Registered Travel Retailer under AGA license. [Click here to purchase your insurance plan.](https://uptrek.com/protect-your-trip)

We strongly recommend reviewing the terms and conditions of any insurance policy you purchase to fully understand the coverage, benefits, and claims process. We will gladly provide the essential documentation to support refund claims with the insurance provider.

**Do I have to pay a deposit?**

No. Once the number of guest reservations reaches the minimum number required for the retreat to become guaranteed, UpTrek charges the guests the cost of the retreat. Guests who reserved will be notified 48 hours in advance that their payment method on file is about to be charged.

**Will I receive a full refund if the retreat is not guaranteed?**

UpTrek does not charge the payment method we collect until the retreat becomes guaranteed. Once the retreat is guaranteed, there will be no reimbursement. Participants are required to purchase travel, medical, and cancellation insurance for protection against any circumstances that might require cancellation or change of travel arrangements.

**Will I receive a full refund if the guaranteed retreat is canceled by the instructor or by UpTrek?**

If the retreat is canceled due to force majeure events or circumstances out of UpTrek's and/or the instructor's control, UpTrek will let you know as soon as possible, refund the total cost of the retreat, and help you find another option for your vacation.
