# Watercolor in Nature - A Painting Retreat with Artist Rosalie Haizlett in France

Paint the natural world in watercolor and ink on an inspiring retreat with artist Rosalie Haizlett in the sunlit countryside of Occitanie, southern France. Through daily nature journaling and observation, you will slow down, look closely, and learn to notice the hidden wonders that surround you, from the veined architecture of a leaf to the way light catches a butterfly’s wing.

Rosalie’s teaching is rooted in celebrating the natural world through art, and across the retreat you will paint botanicals from life, depict birds and pollinators in layered watercolor and ink, develop your own artistic style through guided style studies, and fill a nature journal with pages painted entirely from observation.

The retreat welcomes all levels of experience, though prior watercolor experience is recommended and will help you get the most out of the retreat.

Beyond the studio, venture out on half-day trips to Le Jardin de L'évêché in Castres and to a French botanical garden where resident peacocks may pose for your sketchbook. Later in the week, spend a full day in the medieval town of Albi exploring nature motifs woven into centuries of architecture and visiting the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum and the Berbie Palace gardens.

Your home for the week is a restored French farmhouse on a five-acre estate in the heart of Tarn, surrounded by rolling hills, private gardens, a fruit orchard, and a rustic watchtower, with a spacious reconverted barn serving as your studio. Sit down each evening to a delicious three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with local wine, from the welcome cocktails and canapés on your first night to a farewell celebration on your last.

Please note: the retreat venue and day trips involve walking on uneven ground and cobbled streets. Getting between the studio, accommodations, and the main building where meals are served requires a short walk. This retreat may not be suitable for individuals with low or limited mobility.

### Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport and join the 3:00 PM transfer to your retreat venue. After settling into your room, take a moment to unwind and absorb the tranquil surroundings. Meet your fellow artists and get acquainted with the lovely Rosalie Haizlett, your instructor for the week.

As part of an orientation tour, explore the estate’s charming garden, the historic watchtower, and inviting communal spaces. In the evening, toast to the start of your creative journey with cocktails and bite-sized canapés, followed by a delicious three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and complemented by local French wines.

### Day 2: Classes at the venue
Enjoy a hearty breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, then gather with Rosalie and your fellow artists before heading into your first creative session of the retreat.

Rosalie will open the session with a nature journaling hour, guiding you through observation prompts and small sketches as you tune in to the natural world around you. From there, dive into a materials overview and pen & ink demonstration and color mixing practice as you curate a palette inspired by southern France’s natural beauty. The morning will close with your first exercise painting botanicals from life, working directly from the plants and flowers growing in the estate’s gardens.

After a nourishing lunch, return to the studio for an afternoon of watercolor experiments. Rosalie will show you how to make your own simple cyanotype sun prints using plants, and then she’ll introduce a cyanotype-inspired botanical watercolor technique using indigo watercolor. Next, she’ll guide you through a style study exploring how different artists depict nature in watercolor, helping you identify what draws you in and how to develop your own approach without copying someone else. Put it into practice by painting botanicals from life once more, this time incorporating elements of the artistic style you responded to most.

As the class winds down, take some time to rest in the late afternoon. Gather with Rosalie and your fellow creatives for a delicious three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with a glass of local wine, sharing impressions from the first day of full painting at the retreat.

### Day 3: Art trip to Castres
Kick off the day with a wholesome breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee, then gather your sketchbook and supplies and head out for a half-day trip to Castres.

Once in Castres, explore Le Jardin de L'évêché, a stunning botanical garden, with a nature journal prompt from Rosalie to guide your eye. Sketch quick ink and watercolor landscapes of the garden’s pathways and water reflections along the Agout River, working fast and loose from direct observation.

Return to the venue for a filling lunch, then head into the studio for an afternoon focused on birds in ink and watercolor. First, Rosalie will walk you through a style study of various bird artists to expose you to different styles that might appeal to you. Then she’ll demonstrate linework techniques for capturing feathers and form and share tips for keeping your subjects lifelike. At the end of class, shift into hand lettering, learning to fill out your sketchbook compositions with different styles of writing and building pages where images and text work together.

Enjoy some spare time to recharge in the late afternoon. Indulge in a delightful three-course dinner prepared by the in-house chef and paired with a glass of fragrant wine, sharing sketches from a morning spent painting in the gardens of Castres.

### Day 4: Classes at the venue
Fuel up with a delicious breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, then join Rosalie for a nature journaling hour in the gardens before heading into the studio.

The morning will focus on pollinators. Rosalie will walk you through sketching accurate proportions from reference photos and adding realistic ink texture for detail, then building up watercolor layers to bring your moths, bees, butterflies, and other garden visitors to life with vibrancy and depth. Once your insect is painted, set it inside a botanical scene, painting surrounding foliage to give your subject a world to live in.

After a filling lunch, continue the afternoon with another art class. During this session, you will dive into a style study exploring how other artists depict insects in their work, then shift into hands-on experimentation with nature texture stamps paired with watercolor, a playful technique that brings unexpected textures straight from the natural world onto your page.

Take some time to unwind and relax in the late afternoon. Gather with Rosalie and your fellow artists for a chef-prepared dinner accompanied by a glass of local wine, swapping sketchbook pages buzzing with wings and botanical details.

### Day 5: Art trip to a French botanical garden
Begin the day with a warm breakfast and a morning cup of coffee, then gather your sketchbook and supplies and prepare for the second adventure of the retreat: a half-day trip to a nearby French botanical garden.

Wander the grounds with your sketchbook in hand, painting birds from life as resident peacocks strut through the pathways (weather and peacock cooperation permitting). Rosalie will introduce illustrated nature maps, showing you how to record the garden’s most striking features on paper, from mini landscapes to quick observational sketches of whatever creature or plant catches your eye.

Return to the venue for a leisurely lunch, then head into the studio for a style study of illustrated nature maps by other artists. Spend the afternoon developing the maps you started on location, adding detail and depth from the reference photos you gathered at the garden, implementing hand-lettering techniques that you learned in a previous class, and building out your pages into richly layered visual records of the morning.

Unwind by the pool or on the terraces before gathering for a three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with a glass of local wine, comparing nature maps and peacock sketches from the morning's trip.

### Day 6: Art trip to Albi
Enjoy a generous breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, then gather your sketchbook and camera and prepare for a full-day trip to the medieval town of Albi.

Explore the town’s red-brick streets and centuries-old architecture with a nature-focused eye. Rosalie will challenge you to spot bird imagery carved into stone and botanical patterns threaded through tilework and facades, training your eye to find nature in the built world.

After a relaxing lunch on your own in Albi, head to the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum at the Palais de la Berbie. Move through the collection with your sketchbook open, pulling color inspiration and recording palette swatches directly from the artworks and the museum’s garden, building a personal color reference library rooted in what you observed firsthand.

Return to the venue as the sun dips and take some time to rest in the late afternoon. Gather with Rosalie and your fellow artists for a tasteful three-course dinner prepared by the in-house chef and paired with a glass of local wine, sharing the nature motifs and color palettes you discovered throughout the day.

### Day 7: Classes at the venue
Savor a nourishing breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee, ready to make every brushstroke count on your final full day at the retreat.

Rosalie will open sign-ups for optional one-on-one sessions throughout the day, offering individual guidance on your work. Spend the morning in a reflective nature journaling session, looking back at what you have learned and which aspects of the natural world have stayed with you most. Wrap up your paintings with Rosalie’s support, refining details and finishing anything still in progress.

After a filling lunch, sit down with Rosalie for your one-on-one feedback session, then gather with your fellow artists for a celebratory mini-exhibition. Display any finished work you feel comfortable sharing and flip through each other’s nature journals, taking in the range of perspectives that grew from the same French landscape.

As evening falls, enjoy some time to unwind before dinner. Gather one last time for a delicious farewell dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with aromatic wine, raising a glass to a retreat spent painting the natural world.

### Day 8: Departure
After enjoying a satisfying breakfast with Rosalie and the group, it's time to bid farewell and exchange any last contact details. Prepare for your transfer to Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, scheduled for 10:00 AM, with an estimated arrival time of 11:00 AM.

- "The trip organization and warm, professional service from Uptrek, and the amazing service, delicious food, and high quality from the venue, Domaine d'En Naudet. And the other retreat participants were truly lovely! From the start, UpTrek provided prompt, careful service that was carried right through to our arrival at the retreat. Communication is key, especially when travel is just getting going again, and Andra (the retreat coordinator) was always ready with a response. I really appreciated the sensible, yet friendly approach, as well as the clear policies that were upfront from the start. Meeting Ted (CEO of UpTrek) and Andra put faces to the business - this human touch adds value and reassurance. Sophie and Nicolas (the venue hosts) were charming, attentive hosts who looked after many needs. They served us tasty treats throughout the day, they kept us shaded and they helped find solutions when required. I wish we had 48 hours in which to enjoy each day even more. The venue was excellent. The setting was magical. I was very comfortable and there was plenty of space for a group of this size. The rooms were very clean and the use of laundry facilities was much appreciated. It was lovely to feel at ease to use the pool, the hot tub, the fridge, the common areas, and the grounds - after being cooped up for over two years, this was a wonderful physical release. Having access to a well-lit space for us to enjoy Sketchbook Night Club each night was the icing on the cake: we were able to keep making art, have some laughs and get to know one another better. I would highly recommend each component and hope to have the opportunity to travel this way again. This retreat was truly like a dream come true. I loved it. I thank each of you from the heart."
