## Program

### A Greek Art-Making Adventure
Spend a joyful, creativity-filled week on the sun-drenched island of Zakynthos with the one and only Lilla Rogers, former legendary agent and artist, for an inspiring art retreat filled to the brim with exciting challenges, techniques, materials, projects, and everything in between. This is your golden ticket to learn from one of the world’s most beloved illustration experts on a delicious variety of topics. You'll cover everything from **vintage lettering inspired by the Greek alphabet, unique motifs and borders, pastel textures, loose watercolor and gouache florals, color exploration, and even some Procreate techniques.** Whether you're just getting started or you’ve got sketchbooks full of experience, Lilla’s warm and wise guidance will set your imagination on fire, **and yes, you’re welcome to show her your work, website, or Instagram and ask for direct feedback throughout the retreat.**

Each morning begins with a cozy Warm-Up Circle, where you’ll ease into the day with journaling prompts and playful exercises. Lilla will demo her favorite tricks and techniques, and you’ll receive daily cards for each topic you'll study, handcrafted by Lilla. It’s also a relaxed time to share your creative journey and ask for input on your portfolio or personal projects; Lilla loves seeing what you’re working on. She will help you discover what's unique and special in your art or boost you to the next level in your art career. Along the way, you’ll head out on three fabulous trips: a half-day boat ride across the crystalline coastline to Navagio Beach, with its dramatic cliffs and legendary shipwreck; a half-day trip to the lively streets of Zante Town with its sun-drenched Venetian balconies and colorful architecture; and, lastly, another half-day trip to a local pottery studio, where you'll learn more about Greek symbols, stories, and ethos reflected in their pottery and ceramics.

Every single day, Lilla also gives out a choice of three assignments, made for all levels and all interests: a relaxing art assignment, a challenge assignment, and a Procreate assignment. Take whichever one you’re in the mood for, and change your mind tomorrow if you like.

In addition to the delightful traditional art Lilla will treat you to, you'll also have the opportunity to venture into the digital realm with Lilla's favorite Procreate techniques. The Procreate part of the workshop is entirely optional (and you don't need to bring an iPad with you), but it's a fantastic chance to explore something new in a supportive environment! The bulk of Lilla’s demos are traditional, so if digital isn’t your thing at all, you will be perfectly happy all week, with a relaxing assignment and a challenge waiting for you every single day.

And when the afternoon sun stretches long across the sea, you’ll settle onto the terrace with a cup of something lovely for Lilla’s “Ask Me Anything” time. Ask about the illustration world, marketing tips, portfolio polish, or the secrets of staying creatively lit up. It’s the perfect moment to show her your Instagram, website, or current work and get real-time feedback. If the stars align, she might even pull out the tarot cards for a creative career reading. How fun is that?

**The main topics you'll cover in your classes with Lilla include:**

- Vintage and modern lettering: a crowd favorite
- Motifs and borders: incorporating decorative swirls, swashes, patterns, and much more to embellish your art
- Pastel play: mess around with pastels to create gorgeous smudgy textures under Lilla’s guidance, ready to add to your creative portfolio
- Watercolor and gouache florals: playing with paint to create expressive, loose botanicals
- Color palette discovery: learn to break free from the palettes you normally use and explore new territory
- Procreate techniques: try out Lilla's favorite brushes, techniques, and tricks

**Business conversations might include:**

- Pitching a project in a way you enjoy and that reflects your passions
- Uncovering your creative path
- How to get an agent
- Growing your artistic career and staying focused
- Why branching out your style is an asset to your creative career
- Art as a meditative practice
- Lilla’s career tarot readings
- ...and much more!

Your home for the week is a stunning Greek villa perched on terraced grounds with sweeping views of the Ionian Sea. You'll have exclusive access to a bright, sea-facing Shala art studio, welcoming common areas, and a refreshing infinity pool, providing plenty of space to create, relax, and connect with fellow artists. Outside of class, savor authentic Greek cuisine prepared by the venue's private chef and enjoy leisurely strolls through the villa's gardens and surrounding paths.

Please note: the retreat venue is located on terraced grounds, with access to the studio, common areas, and accommodations requiring the use of stairways. Getting to the nearby beach also requires descending a steep stairway of approximately 50 meters (164 feet), and there will be plenty of walking during the trips. Therefore, this retreat is not suitable for individuals with low or limited mobility.

### Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Zakynthos Airport for your 3:30 PM transfer to a breathtaking seafront venue overlooking the sea.

Settle into your elegant room and take a moment to unwind before joining a guided tour of the venue grounds. Discover the inviting pool, the shala art studio, and the inviting common areas. Meet your lovely instructor for the retreat, the lovely artist and former agent Lilla Rogers, as well as your fellow artists.

As the evening winds down, savor a delightful three-course welcome dinner in a warm and lively atmosphere. Enjoy a glass of wine with Lilla and the group, and chat about the adventures ahead.

### Day 2: Drawing pretty florals + Greek foods (venue)
Enjoy a hearty breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, followed by a brief morning check-in with the venue hosts before heading into your very first class with Lilla. This fun and welcoming session sets the stage for the days ahead, as Lilla shares a peek at what’s in store for you. Get a taste of the styles you’ll explore, the fun techniques you’ll play with, and the projects you’ll bring to life.

Each morning starts with a series of gentle, guided warm-up exercises in your art journal. These playful prompts help shake off the cobwebs, hush the inner critic, and get your hands moving. Once you’re all warmed up, it’s time to dive into the day’s main project: bold, juicy, joy-filled florals in watercolor and gouache! Get ready to splash, layer, and play as Lilla shows you her favorite ways to bring flowers to life on the page. You’ll learn how to make loose, expressive petals, build rich, vibrant blooms, and mix colors that absolutely sing. She’ll demo magical techniques with inky linework, gum arabic, resists, and more tools that will take your florals from lovely to utterly electric.

And here comes something you’ll get every single day: Lilla hands out a choice of three assignments, so there is something here for every level and every interest. There’s a relaxing art assignment, a challenge assignment, and a Procreate assignment, and you simply take whichever one you’re in the mood for. Feel like drifting along happily today and pushing yourself hard tomorrow? Perfect. How fun is that?

After a nourishing lunch, return to the studio for another afternoon session and dive into the next exciting topic: the food! You’ll be working from a gorgeous set of printed cards, handcrafted by Lilla just for this trip, brimming with lemons and figs, olives and warm bread, honey, and little hand-painted plates. It’s the authentic Greek cuisine bursting with flavor that has been landing on your table all day, and it is begging to be painted. Keep splashing, layering, and playing, and let your Greek treats come out every bit as loose and expressive as your botanicals.

If time permits, as the class comes to an end, Lilla will also offer a career tarot reading to a few lucky artists.

Take some time to recharge and unwind before dinner. Sit down to a delicious three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with local wine, sharing first impressions from a day full of creativity and inspiration.

### Day 3: Pastel & color experiments + boat trip to Navagio Beach
Fuel up with a wholesome breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, then get your camera and prepare for the first adventure on the retreat: a half-day boat trip to one of the island’s most dramatic landscapes.

You will sail to Navagio Beach, known locally as Smugglers Cove, enclosed by sheer white limestone cliffs and accessible only by sea. At the heart of the cove, you will find the rusting hull of the MV Panagiotis, a cargo ship that ran aground under circumstances that have never been fully resolved. You will take it all in from the boat, gathering reference photos of the colors, the shapes, the light, and the dramatic forms around you. The boat will cruise at a relaxed pace, and if the weather permits, you may go for a swim in the turquoise water.

Let the colors of the seascape soak in: the crystal-clear turquoise of the waters, the warm gold of the shore, and the deep blue of the sky. Take it all in as inspiration, and tuck it away in your creative pocket.

Head back to the venue for a filling lunch, then prepare for another afternoon art class. It’s time to dive into the day’s main project with a Lilla classic: pastel and color experiments. Lilla will open your eyes to the versatility of pastels and how to use them for your textures and motifs, so mess around with pastels to create gorgeous smudgy textures under Lilla’s guidance, with this morning’s cliffs, turquoise water, and warm gold shore still fresh in your mind.

Then dive into the next exciting topic: color discovery. Browse through Lilla’s lovely color cards with distinctive imagery, printed up just for this class to guide you in creating new color stories. Your color choices are key to making stunning art. Moving away from the palettes you’re most used to is difficult, but Lilla will guide you towards uncharted territory in a kaleidoscope of ways! And of course you have your three assignments to choose from today! After a morning at sea, take whichever one your mood calls for and let your new palettes loose on it. If time permits, as the class comes to an end, Lilla will also offer a career tarot reading to a few lucky artists.

As the evening falls in, wind down by the pool or in the gardens before dinner. Join Lilla and your fellow artists for a delightful three-course dinner accompanied by local wine, filling the evening with laughter and stories from a morning at sea.

### Day 4: Stylish, vintage lettering - mixed media & Procreate (venue)
Savor a nourishing breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee, followed by a quick morning check-in with the venue hosts. Join Lilla and your fellow artists in the studio for another day full of creativity and inspiration.

The morning will kick off with a bit of journaling warm-ups to get your mind flowing and your hand moving. Then it’s time to dive into the day’s main project: stylish vintage and modern lettering, a crowd favorite. With your special lettering cards, lovingly created by Lilla just for this retreat, you’ll get to explore a wide variety of styles and details like fonts, embellishments, serifs, strokes, line weight, shadows, bevels, and more. And since you are in Greece, why not let Alpha, Beta, and Delta sneak into your sketchbook too? Borrow the curls and swoops of Greek letters and see where this timeless alphabet takes you. Choose your favorite bits and build your own whimsical, personal lettering library, with a touch of Greek inspiration.

Refuel with a refreshing lunch, then it’s time to dive into all things Procreate. Lilla will walk you through her favorite brushes, playful techniques, clever tricks, and the gooey oil paint app she can’t get enough of. You’ll explore how to layer color, add texture, and create dynamic compositions digitally, all while keeping that hand-drawn charm.

Bring your own art into Procreate, whether that’s a watercolor bit, an ink drawing, or the lettering you made this very morning, and then add to it and embellish it with Lilla’s brushes. Once your artwork is in there, you can move things around, change up whatever you like, and try a color six different ways. It makes making a piece so fun, so gorgeous, and so easy! And yes, you can bring in artwork from the previous days too.

This class is entirely optional (you don’t even need an iPad with you), but it’s still a great way to branch out and try new tools. This is your chance to see if Procreate is something you’d like to explore further, whether you’re just taking your first steps into the digital medium or you’ve been wondering about adding digital elements to your traditional work. And if you’re already well-acquainted with Procreate, there are plenty of Lilla’s own techniques and brushes to pick up, so why not share your favorite tips with the rest of the group too? If digital really isn’t your thing, there is a whole traditional day here for you: keep going with your lettering in paint, ink, and pencil for as long as you like.

Your three assignments are waiting as always: a relaxing art assignment, a challenge assignment, and a Procreate assignment. Go as gentle or as bold as you fancy!

Take some time to rest and unwind in the late afternoon. Gather with Lilla and the group for a wholesome three-course dinner prepared by the in-house chef. Pour a glass of local wine and trade stories and insights from the day.

### Day 5: Decorative motifs + trip to Zante Town
Settle in with a warm breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee, then gather your art supplies and get ready for the next adventure of the retreat: a half-day trip to Zante Town, the island’s capital.

The morning will kick off with a bit of journaling warm-ups to get your mind flowing and your hand moving. Today will be all about charming vintage motifs and borders! Another signature element in Lilla’s art, motifs and borders are an excellent way to add a bit of flavor to your art, from paintings to lettering projects. Motifs are little doo-dads, bits and bobs, or icons; decorative bits you can add to anything to make it more personal. These can vary from flowers, vines, scrolls, and patterns to objects. You’ll have another gorgeous set of printed cards from Lilla, customized for this trip, and you can work them up in whichever media takes your fancy.

Once you arrive in Zante, explore the town at your own pace with a local guide on hand to point you toward the most striking views and charming antique shops. Zante Town will greet you with the sea on one side and green hills behind it, and you will find no shortage of visual inspiration to gather for your work back in the studio. Lilla will show you how to incorporate motifs, swirls, swashes, and lettering into your sketches. They’re easy to draw and they bring a lot of impact to the table. Let your eye wander to the little motifs and patterns tucked into the wrought-iron balconies, faded doorways, and sun-bleached tiles of Zante, weaving Greece-inspired designs into your art.

Return to the venue and enjoy a leisurely lunch, then join another “Ask Lilla Anything” session in the afternoon. Ask her about the creative world, how to connect with others in illustration, how to promote your work in ways that feel natural, and where your art might really click. If time allows, Lilla may offer a career tarot reading for an extra spark of insight. Your three assignments are here again today: a relaxing art assignment, a challenge assignment, and a Procreate assignment. Pick your mood and let your motifs run wild!

As the class ends, take some time to relax in the late afternoon. Sit down to a tasteful three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with local wine, swapping discoveries from a morning in the island’s capital town.

### Day 6: Art-making buffet + trip to a local pottery studio
Kick off the day with a delicious breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, then grab your sketchbook and art supplies for another immersive trip to a local pottery studio on the island.

You will spend the morning in the studio of a local potter, watching them shape clay by hand into pieces that carry centuries of Greek tradition. The artist will walk you through the symbols and stories woven into their work, from the cultural roots of each motif to the meaning carried in the patterns and glazes. Take notes of the motifs and symbols that you see, capturing these little pockets of inspiration in your sketchbook for later use back in the studio. Who knows, maybe a swirl from an ancient clay jar or the flick of a painted wave might just find its way into your own lettering!

Return to the venue for a filling lunch, then wander back into the studio for another afternoon of creative magic. Spread out your morning’s sketches and treasures, and let them spark a brand-new piece: a playful art-making buffet of lettering, borders and motifs, pastel textures, loose florals, and a little Procreate sorcery. Let every technique you’ve picked up from Lilla swirl together, and allow the creative whirlwind to sweep you wherever it wants to go. Dabble in Greek lettering and motifs, chase colors and textures that catch your eye, and conjure up a piece that captures a little piece of your time in Greece.

And if the stars align and time allows, Lilla may just pull out her cards for another career tarot reading as the class comes to an end. Your three assignments are on the table as always: a relaxing art assignment, a challenge assignment, and a Procreate assignment, so take the gentle route, throw yourself at the challenge, or head into Procreate.

Enjoy some spare time to reset before dinner. Gather with Lilla and your fellow artists for a nourishing three-course meal prepared by the in-house chef and paired with a glass of local wine. Soak in the lovely atmosphere filled with laughter, lively conversation, and impressions from today’s trip.

### Day 7: Painting interesting and stylish people (venue)
Enjoy a satisfying breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee, followed by a brief morning check-in with the venue hosts, settling into your final full day at the retreat. Laugh, sip, stretch, and get ready to wrap things up in style!

Today is all about people: interesting, stylish, character-filled people! Get ready to sketch, paint, and play as Lilla shows you her favorite ways to bring a person to life on the page. You’ll learn how to build a figure with real personality rather than perfect anatomy, have fun with posture and gesture, and pile on the marvelous hats, hair, patterns, and shoes that make a character unmistakably somebody. She’ll demo her tricks for keeping a figure loose, lively, and full of charm, and everything you’ve picked up this week is fair game here, from watercolor and gouache to ink, pastel, and a little Procreate to finish.

Take a break for lunch and enjoy a delicious meal, then continue the day with another art workshop. You’ll be working from another inspiring set of cards, specially designed by Lilla to fire up your imagination, spark bold choices, and keep things delightfully unpredictable. Want to go wild with color? Try a new shape? Add a pop of contrast or a swoosh of ink? Now’s the time. Lilla will be right there with you, offering one-on-one encouragement, cheering you on, and helping you lean into the fun of it all.

One last time, take your pick of the three assignments: a relaxing art assignment, a challenge assignment, and a Procreate assignment. Finish the week exactly the way you want to.

Take some time to rest and unwind in the late afternoon. If time permits, Lilla may do another career tarot reading. As evening falls, gather for a celebratory farewell dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with local wine, with a live Greek dance show and band to close out the retreat. Raise a glass to discovering a freer, braver way to paint and to the lasting memories and friendships you have made!

### Day 8: Departure
Enjoy one last breakfast with Lilla and your fellow artists, then get ready for your transfer to Zakynthos Airport (ZTH). Check-out is at 10:00 AM, and you'll arrive at the airport at around 10:30 AM.

All meals are included. Between meals, you will have access to a snack bar with water, tea, juices, coffee, and homemade snacks. The exact menu will vary based on the availability of seasonal ingredients.

It was a wonderful creative experience! *Lilla is an exceptional teacher, insightful with deep experience of her own which she shares generously. Lilla is both very encouraging and direct in her feedback. It’s the best kind of challenge. The atmosphere and approach encouraged us to focus, experiment, learn and share. And have fun! The camaraderie among students was an added pleasure*. Being there was special, and we all wanted to soak it up, learn from Lilla, and from each other*. The setting was beautiful, the food fantastic, and the schedule made time for focus, relaxation, exploration, and lots of laughter and fun. We were free to put our energy towards creativity.* *I look forward to having the chance to attend any (and all!) of Lilla’s future retreats, having experienced the exceptional Lettering Retreat in France in April 2024*. I expect future retreats will be as well-organized and creatively rewarding as the first. Thanks again for the wonderful retreat, and ongoing MATS classes!"

- **"**A beautiful inspiring and uplifting course. Gorgeously curated by Lilla Rogers. Totally made with love and joy and passion. I could not have asked for anything more. X"

- "This retreat exceeded my expectations! Lilla was just wonderful! She is so knowledgable and so nurturing to her students. She's an excellent teacher and so much fun to be around. 10/10"

- "The retreat with Lilla Rogers far exceeded my expectations. The teaching itself was excellent, of course - but I was not expecting to have so much information and such a generous amount of time from Lilla - it was wonderful. Live demos, chances to try new materials, endless inspiration and the opportunity to do all of this in the company of people who shared the same passion - truly life-changing. This was a trip of a lifetime for me - but I would not hesitate to attend a retreat every single year if I was able to do so!"

- "What a “pinch me” moment to be among Lilla and the other attendees. There was a lot of camaraderie from the start. Learned so much from the daily instruction and have already begun incorporating what Lilla taught into my daily art routine. She brings a level of inspiration, insight and intelligence to her courses that is unparalleled. Have been taking MATS classes online for years, but being with Lilla live was on a whole other level. She cares a lot about her students and gets the best out of us. Thank you to everyone one of you for this magical experience! Look forward to attending another one!"

- "My experience on the Retreat With Lilla Rogers was a dream! Lilla is an experienced, well-prepared, positive teacher, and attracts groups of diligent, talented participants. Our group was a dynamic mix, a natural result of Lilla's years of pulling all sorts of creative people together through her world-wide illustration courses. That broad outreach could fill many retreats. Thank you to everyone involved - for me, it was the trip of a lifetime, and an important part of my professional development as an artist."

**Reviews from previous UpTrek retreats at this venue:**

- "Well it was lovely in all aspects! David’s gourmet food was a dining extravaganza! The quaint villa & the nearby town were enormously refreshing. The love & care put into the service was above reproach! I would highly suggest this venue to anyone interested in seeing Greece!"

- "The hosts really made my trip special by their loving and kind hearts! They made me feel like family as well as all their staff! The estate was breathtaking and I hope to visit again soon! It was magical and I truly appreciate everything done for us while there, their openness and especially the hugs! I miss them and the warm generosity and kindness. It's true that I felt more at ease, comfortable and hugged being a stranger welcomed there, than I actually do coming back home...!!! That is saying a lot about the character and hearts of Karen and David! It reflected in everything and everyone whom works there. That is why it works so well, as David says, that's Living, doing what you love! Thank you to all for the fond memories ;)"

- "The venue is beautiful. Waking up to see the sunrise was a perfect way to start the day. Food was authentic and delicious. We had some hot days in the studio, but apparently, this was a heat wave, but otherwise, it worked well. Staff was genuinely sweet and accommodating, and hard working. It was interesting to experience the Greek way of life. Our hosts cared about every detail. I enjoyed it so much that I will return next year and bring my daughter. Uptrek, thank you for finding this gem!"

- "Beautiful location! There was a lovely mix of art classes at the retreat, and excursions to paint or take reference photos! Our hosts were warm, kind, and very talented in cooking and treating guest! Thank you for an experience of a lifetime!"
