## Program

### Florals and Landscapes Art Retreat
Explore the full depth of expressive watercolor painting on an inspiring retreat with artist Sushma Hegde in the picturesque Loire Valley of France. During this retreat, Sushma will walk you through her loose, confident approach to watercolor from the ground up, helping you master the fluid properties of paint and create vibrant, expressive florals, botanicals, and landscapes.

Working directly with brush and pigment rather than relying on detailed pencil sketches, Sushma will demonstrate her unique way of breaking down complex scenes into simple, confident shapes. Enjoy daily classes, demonstrations, and hands-on experience with Sushma's intuitive color palette and playful brush-handling, learning how to control transparency, simplify natural forms, and let go of perfectionism on the page. You will develop your own artistic painting style, moving away from simply copying the shapes in front of you, and receive plenty of one-on-one feedback and guidance from Sushma.

This retreat is an open invitation to slow down and use your artistic eye to understand the world around you in beautiful shapes, colors, and patterns that are waiting to be painted, all in a warm and supportive environment. The retreat is open to all levels of experience.

Beyond the studio, explore the Loire Valley on art trips that will fuel your creativity. Take a half-day trip to the medieval riverside town of Saumur, where you'll visit the impressive Château de Saumur, and spend a full day at Château de Villandry, a grand country house known for its extraordinary contemporary garden design. Get inspired by the stunning nature that surrounds you, translating it into beautiful watercolor pieces.

**The topics covered during your classes with Sushma include:**

- Painting directly with watercolor instead of relying on detailed pencil sketches
- Breaking down complex scenes into simple shapes
- Seeing nature through an artist's eye
- Loosening up your watercolor style
- Painting with more freedom and less perfectionism
- Building confidence when painting outdoors
- Getting past the fear of a blank page
- Mixing colors with confidence
- Learning to interpret a scene instead of just copying it
- Creating loose, expressive flowers and landscapes with confidence
- ...and many more!

By the end of the retreat, you will have a collection of finished paintings that connect you to France and a creative practice that you can take home with you after the retreat ends.

Your home for the week will be a historic 19th-century French château. Your art classes will take place both indoors, in the château's well-lit studio, and outdoors, surrounded by blooming gardens, open skies, and the layered charm of the venue. Indulge in delicious meals prepared by a private chef and under the supervision of the château’s nutritionist. Taste authentic French flavors in a wine-tasting event with a top local sommelier native to the Loire Valley, and savor a selection of artisanal French cheeses in delightful cheese platters accompanying each dinner.

### Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Angers (St. Laud) train station with enough time to catch the 4:00 PM group transfer, arriving at the beautiful château by 5:00 PM.

Upon arrival, you will meet artist Sushma Hegde, your instructor for the week, as well as your fellow creatives. After settling into your comfortable room, take part in a lovely orientation tour to get familiar with the impressive estate, including its picturesque gardens, serene woodlands, historic salon, and cozy library.

In the evening, join Sushma and the group for a special welcome dinner. Indulge in a delicious, three-course meal accompanied by a glass of aromatic French wine and delightful cheese platters.

### Day 2: Classes at the venue
Enjoy a hearty breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, then join Sushma and your fellow artists for a quick morning check-in with the venue hosts before settling into the art studio.

You will spend the morning getting to know your brushes and paints through a series of simple, playful exercises. Together you'll explore different brush movements, experiment with paint and water, and lay the groundwork for everything you'll paint over the coming days.

After a leisurely lunch, return to the studio for another afternoon session in which Sushma will demonstrate how she paints a variety of leaves inspired by the local surroundings. She will share how she uses different brush movements, controls transparency, and simplifies natural forms while introducing the watercolor techniques that will be used throughout the retreat. With her thoughtful guidance, you will paint multiple leaf shapes and simple flowers to slowly get into the groove of creating loosely.

As the class comes to an end, enjoy some spare time to unwind before dinner. Gather with Sushma and your fellow artists for a delightful three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and accompanied by a cheese board of fine French cheeses and a glass of local wine, sharing first impressions from the first full day at the retreat.

### Day 3: Art trip to Saumur
Kick off the day with a wholesome breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, then gather your art supplies and head out for the first adventure of the retreat: a half-day trip to the medieval town of Saumur.

As you walk along this riverside town shaped by pale limestone, iron balconies, and steep rooftops, slow down and learn how to experience your surroundings through an artist's eye. Instead of trying to capture everything you see, Sushma will guide you on how to recognize simple shapes, interesting patterns, textures, and the small details that make a place memorable. As you explore the charming town of Saumur, stop by the impressive Château de Saumur, a fortified castle that is now turned into a museum. Sketch if you feel inspired, or take reference photos, looking for intriguing shapes and patterns through an artistic lens.

Head back to the venue for a satisfying lunch, then dive into an afternoon session in the studio. Gather your sketches, photos, and observations from the morning's trip and use them as inspiration for a series of watercolor studies. Sushma will demonstrate how to simplify what you see into expressive marks, mixing natural greens, and translate the textures and foliage around you into loose, confident paintings. By the end of the class, you'll begin to see the world less as individual objects and more as beautiful shapes, colors, and patterns waiting to be painted.

In the late afternoon, take some time to reset before dinner. Sit down to a tasteful three-course dinner prepared by the in-house chef and paired with a glass of fragrant wine and French cheeses, sharing sketches from a morning spent painting in the Loire Valley.

### Day 4: Classes at the venue
Fuel up with a delicious breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee, followed by a brief morning check-in with Sushma and the venue hosts, settling into the gentle rhythm of the day.

The morning will be all about painting loose florals. Through a series of fun prompts and creative exercises, Sushma will share the same approach she uses whenever she's unsure what to paint or simply wants to loosen up. You'll paint a variety of flowers while learning how to simplify them and approach each one without wondering where to begin.

After a delicious lunch, continue the day with another afternoon workshop. Together with Sushma and your fellow artists, you'll explore how color choices influence the mood of a painting. Rather than matching nature exactly, you'll experiment with harmonious palettes that create different atmospheres before bringing everything together in a loose floral composition. During this session, you'll be encouraged to move away from just copying and start developing your own personal style of painting.

As the class comes to an end, take some time to recharge before dinner. Gather for a wholesome three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with a glass of local French wine and a board of fine French cheeses. Soak in the lovely atmosphere and lively conversations, and share impressions from another day full of painting.

### Day 5: Art trip to Château de Villandry
After a generous breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, gather your art supplies and head out for a full-day trip to Château de Villandry, a grand country house in the heart of the Loire Valley, known for its spectacular gardens and avant-garde architecture.

Once the home of a noble family close to the French crown, the Château de Villandry has been shaped by centuries of history, culture, and transformations. Wander through the Château's seven meticulously designed gardens, putting into practice everything you have learned so far. Under Sushma's gentle guidance, explore different ways of simplifying a scene through quick thumbnail sketches, helping you identify strong compositions without feeling overwhelmed by the amount of detail around you.

Take a break for lunch and enjoy a packed picnic meal from the venue, then spend the afternoon exploring the rest of the Château's grounds. As you paint throughout the day, Sushma will help you focus on understanding light and shadow, creating depth through foreground, middle ground, and background, and capturing the unique character of trees and flowers with loose, expressive brushwork. You'll also learn how to decide what to leave out so your paintings feel clear, balanced, and personal rather than crowded with detail.

As the evening falls in, return to the venue and take some time to unwind before dinner. Gather with Sushma and your fellow artists for a chef-prepared dinner accompanied by a glass of local wine and a board of delightful French cheeses, sharing impressions and creative discoveries from today's exciting trip.

### Day 6: Classes at the venue & wine-tasting event
Savor a warm breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee, followed by a quick morning check-in with Sushma and the venue hosts.

You'll begin by looking at how to combine inspiration from the gardens, flowers, and landscapes you've explored throughout the week to create a painting that feels personal rather than simply copying a scene. Sushma will demonstrate how she develops a painting from start to finish, sharing her thought process and the small decisions she makes along the way.

After a relaxed lunch, continue the day with another afternoon session. This class will be dedicated to creating your own paintings, with plenty of individual guidance and feedback. Whether you choose to paint a landscape, flowers, or a combination of both, you'll be encouraged to experiment, trust your instincts, and develop a painting that reflects your own creative voice.

As the afternoon winds down, enjoy some leisure time before dinner. Join Sushma and your fellow artists for a complimentary wine-tasting event at the château, led by a top local sommelier who spent six years working alongside chef Gordon Ramsay before returning to his native Loire. Sit down to a nourishing three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with a glass of the Loire Valley’s celebrated regional wine and some local French cheeses, trading insights and impressions from the day.

### Day 7: Classes at the venue
Settle in with a filling breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, followed by a brief morning check-in with Sushma and the venue hosts.

Spend the morning in the studio finishing your works, adding any last details and final touches. Throughout the day, Sushma will offer one-on-one guidance, demonstrations, and personalized feedback shaped by everything you've explored together during the week. The class will end with an open Q&A, giving you the chance to ask any remaining questions and seek advice on your paintings and what steps to take next. This Q&A session aims to ensure that you leave feeling confident about continuing to paint long after the retreat has ended.

After a leisurely lunch, gather with Sushma and your fellow artists and prepare for a special event: a celebratory mini-exhibition of the works you created throughout the week. Participation is entirely optional. Take this opportunity to share your favorite paintings and sketchbooks, exchange thoughts with Sushma and your fellow creatives, and celebrate the progress you've made together over the course of the retreat.

As evening falls, take some time to freshen up before dinner, then gather for one last farewell dinner prepared by the in-house chef and paired with aromatic wine, raising a glass to the artistic discoveries made and unforgettable memories!

### Day 8: Departure
Enjoy a final breakfast with Sushma and your fellow artists before it's time to part ways. Exchange any last contacts, then get ready for your 8:00 AM transfer to Angers (St. Laud) train station. You will arrive at the train station at around 9:00 AM.

As you make your way back home, take with you a heart brimming with inspiration and lasting memories.

No. Once the number of guest reservations reaches the minimum number required for the retreat to become guaranteed, UpTrek charges the guests the cost of the retreat. Guests who reserved will be notified 48 hours in advance that their payment method on file is about to be charged.

**Will I receive a full refund if the retreat is not guaranteed?**

UpTrek does not charge the payment method we collect until the retreat becomes guaranteed. Once the retreat is guaranteed, there will be no reimbursement. Participants are required to purchase travel, medical, and cancellation insurance for protection against any circumstances that might require cancellation or change of travel arrangements.

**Will I receive a full refund if the guaranteed retreat is cancelled by the instructor or by UpTrek?**

If the retreat is canceled due to force majeure events or circumstances out of UpTrek's and/or the instructor's control, UpTrek will let you know as soon as possible, refund the total cost of the retreat, and help you find another option for your vacation.
