Day 1: Arrival

On the first day you will have a free shuttle service from Faro Airport at 03:00 p.m. Arrive as a group at the River House and spend your day exploring the property. Guests who wish to arrive on their own will be able to check-in after 02:00 p.m.

Today you will start your first art lesson with artist and art tutor Tracy-Jane Pooler. Learn how to depict shapes, textures and forms from nature using various drawing techniques and materials such as graphite or charcoal. Painters will be able to enjoy the wonderful landscape scenery from the terrace and learn new tips and tricks on how they can improve their technique. In the afternoon you can explore the via Algarviana route at an easy walking pace.

Tracy-Jane will help you explore new artistic techniques using brusho. By using vibrant colors you'll understand the power of contrasts and how to integrate this in your art. Explore different landscape opportunities from the terrace or create abstract art concepts using your newly acquired skills. In the afternoon enjoy a sunset river walk and study reflections on the water for your art projects.

You will spend the day outside and use the stunning locations around the house as inspiration for plein air painting. Tracy-Jane will teach you how to select the right landscape based on themes of interest. Spend the full day working on your project using any preferred medium.

This day is reserved for play and experimentation. Use ink or mixed media and discover how to create interesting artwork. Pens and brushes will be used to help you understand how versatile ink is as a medium. In the afternoon there will be an optional visit to a nearby historical town where you will be able to explore a Moorish castle and take dinner on your own.

If you ever had trouble drawing animals or incorporating them in your artwork, Tracy-Jane will show you some handy techniques that can be used to make your creations lifelike. Turn simple shapes into various complex animals. From the smallest mouse, to the biggest elephant, anything goes in this session.

You will be staying at River House, a beautiful 5 bedroom property that has an exceptional 360° panoramic view of the Funcho Dam and the surrounding countryside. The house has a common lounge area, a sunset terrace with a BBQ station, a waterfront deck and a pool deck next to a beautiful infinity swimming pool.

You will be staying at River House, a beautiful 5 bedroom property that has an exceptional 360° panoramic view of the Funcho Dam and the surrounding countryside. The house has a common lounge area, a sunset terrace with a BBQ station, a waterfront deck and a pool deck next to a beautiful infinity swimming pool.


On the first floor there are 3 bedrooms that share a master bathroom. Each room has its unique style, some have panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, others have wonderful Juliet balconies, and 1 room has 2 roof windows perfect for stargazing.

Rooms are assigned based on pricing and availability.

During your stay you will be served a variety of wholesome vegetarian dishes and some fish options. Everything is cooked using fresh produce from the local village market when possible. All meals are seasoned with Algarve sea salt, Flor de Sal, and prepared daily from scratch.

This painting vacation takes place at Figs on the Funcho, an idyllic and private location in Algarve, with direct views of the Funcho Dam, just 3.4 km / 2.1 miles from the village Sao Bartolomeu de Messines.

Art Tutor

Tracy has been teaching art for over 14 years to students at the Telford College of Art Technology and art workshop participants in beautiful Portugal. Her work is vibrant, colorful, expressive, with its foundations firmly based on Realism. She enjoys capturing life and energy in her paintings and has a passion for sharing her knowledge and skills through tutorials and demonstrations. Tracy-Jane contributes to the step lessons series "Pick up a Paintbrush" that can be found online in the Algarve Artist magazine.

The vacation is suitable for all experience levels, from complete beginners to painting enthusiasts looking to practice and improve their technique.


When is the painting and drawing retreat available?

The painting and drawing vacation in Portugal is available two times per year. Please check our calendar for availability.


What mediums will be used?

You will be using a variety of mediums like graphite pencils, chalk pastels, charcoal, ink, watercolor, acrylic paints, brusho.


Can my non-painting partner join me?

Of course, non-painting partners are welcome to join. Please get in touch for special non-painter rates.


Are there any check-in and check-out hours?

Please make your travel arrangements to check-in after 02:00 p.m. Check-out is after breakfast on the last day.


How far in advance should I book?

The program is in high demand, please make sure to book at least 60 days in advance.

Where should I land? Are airport transfers included?

Is any equipment provided?

Art equipment is supplied, but if you have favorite brushes, paints or materials, please feel free to bring them. Art supplies during workshops include graphite pencils, chalk pastels, charcoal, ink, watercolor, acrylic paints, brusho. A3 paper is the maximum paper size offered, if you like to work with large canvases, these can be purchased for you at an extra cost.


What should I pack?

Please bring mosquito repellent, sunscreen, swimming suit, sun hat, suitable footwear for walking when exploring the surrounding area. Also bring plastic or cardboard tubes to take your rolled art home.


What’s the weather like when this retreat takes place?

June has warm temperatures and rain is almost nonexistent. Daytime temperatures reach an average of 16°C (60 °F) and a high of 28°C (82°F). Night temperatures can fall to 17°C (62°F) during an average night. September has warm and reliably dry sunny weather. Daytime temperatures reach an average of 23°C (73°F) and a high of 30°C (86°F). Night temperatures can fall to 17°C (62°F) during an average night.


How many people are to be expected on the painting retreat?

There is a maximum number of 14 participants.


Do I need a visa?

Guests traveling from EU and/or Schengen member states may enter Portugal for tourist purposes without a visa. Please contact us for further guidance.


Are there any age restrictions?

Guests aged 18 and above are welcome.


What language is used during the painting classes and other activities?

The entire experience is available in English.
