# Plein-air Painting in Watercolor and Ink Retreat with Artist Leslie Stroz in France

Join artist and author Leslie Stroz for a week of plein air painting, quiet observation, and creative exploration in the rolling countryside of southwestern France. Working in watercolor and ink, you’ll explore observational drawing, expressive mark-making, color mixing with a limited palette, and the art of creating small, atmospheric paintings from life.

Known for her tiny paintings created on location around the world, Leslie’s approach focuses less on perfection and more on learning to truly see. Through demonstrations, gentle guidance, and plenty of time to paint, you’ll build confidence working from life while developing your own personal style and visual voice. Whether you’re completely new to plein air painting or already carry a sketchbook everywhere you go, this retreat is designed to meet you where you are.

Throughout the week, you’ll create a collection of small paintings inspired by the villages, gardens, rivers, and landscapes of rural France.

Enjoy a full-day trip to the medieval town of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, where you’ll sketch and paint on location before visiting the beautiful Jardins de Quercy. Later in the week, travel to the historic city of Cahors for a half-day outing, including a peaceful riverboat tour along the Lot River with opportunities to sketch the surrounding scenery and the iconic Pont Valentré.

Painting sessions will take place in a spacious restored barn studio filled with natural light, as well as throughout the grounds, from shaded terraces and garden paths to quiet ponds and tucked-away corners perfect for sketching outdoors. Between painting sessions, relax in elegant ensuite rooms, enjoy shared meals and conversation, or unwind beside the heated pool surrounded by the calm beauty of the French countryside.

## Program

### Plein-air Painting in Watercolor and Ink
Settle into a week of plein-air painting on an art retreat with Tiny Painting pioneer and plein-air artist Leslie Stroz in the sunlit countryside of France’s Lot region. Through live demonstrations and hands-on exercises, Leslie will help you build the observational skills and creative confidence to paint from life with watercolors and ink.

Whether you’re painting on the retreat grounds or sketching in the cobbled streets of a medieval town, Leslie will help you slow down, look more closely, and translate what you see onto the page in your own unique way.

Leslie’s teaching style is warm and encouraging, grounded in decades of studio and classroom experience. Expect short demonstrations followed by plenty of time to paint and experiment on your own, with Leslie available for personalized feedback and one-on-one guidance. A travel sketchbook will be your companion throughout the week, building into a visual diary of your time in France. Whether you are working on the venue grounds or in the cobblestone streets of a medieval town, Leslie will help you see the world around you with fresh eyes and translate it onto the page.

Beyond the studio, paint your way through the surrounding region on two unforgettable trips. Head out on a full-day trip to the medieval town of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, sketching its cobblestone streets and riverside views before visiting the Jardins de Quercy for an afternoon of painting among sculpted hedgerows and flowering gardens. Later in the week, set out on a half-day trip to the medieval city of Cahors for a guided riverboat tour along the Lot River, capturing quick color notes and sketches as you glide past medieval towers and the 14th-century Pont Valentré.

This retreat welcomes artists of all experience levels. Whether you have been painting en plein air for decades or are picking up a brush for the first time, you will find a supportive, encouraging environment where curiosity and experimentation come first.

Stay on a private estate set across 75 acres of fields, forests, and manicured gardens in the heart of Lot-et-Garonne. Work in a light-filled converted barn studio, a smaller studio with garden access, or the piano room in the main house. The grounds include two ponds, a heated pool, walking trails, terraces, and a variety of outdoor seating areas perfect for sketching or quiet reflection. Between sessions, unwind in spacious ensuite rooms and comfortable shared spaces with views in every direction.

### Day 1: Arrival
Get transferred from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS) at 3:00 PM, arriving at the venue by 4:00 PM. Settle into your room, then join Leslie and your fellow artists for an orientation tour, exploring the gardens, the lovely terraces, the creative studio, and communal spaces. Over a fabulous welcoming dinner, enjoy a relaxed conversation about the week ahead while savoring local flavors and a glass of regional wine.

### Day 2: Classes at the venue
Wake to a hearty breakfast, then gather with Leslie and your fellow artists for a morning introduction to plein-air painting.

Through warm-up exercises and a live demonstration, Leslie will walk you through the fundamentals of drawing from life and building observational skills. Pick up your watercolors and ink and put these techniques into practice to prepare for your trips, scaling your first tiny paintings on the venue grounds.

After a satisfying lunch, head back outside with fresh eyes. Paint the gardens or the rolling fields beyond the venue, with Leslie available for one-on-one feedback as you find your rhythm working outdoors. Explore color mixing with a limited palette in preparation for your trips. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore the grounds or keep painting.

Toward evening, take time to relax. Go for a walk, unwind by the pool, or continue working in the gardens, woodlands, or shaded terraces. Wind down with a three-course dinner prepared by your private chef and paired with local wine, a warm end to your first full day of painting.

### Day 3: Trip to Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val and Jardins de Quercy
Watch the early sun break through the branches as you sit down to breakfast with Leslie, then gather over coffee to talk through the day ahead.

Pack your sketchbook and camera, and travel to Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, a medieval town nestled against the cliffs of the Aveyron Gorges. With an English-speaking guide leading the way, wander the cobblestone streets and riverside views while Leslie offers a quick demonstration and helps you capture the town in quick, expressive sketches and tiny paintings. Capture reference photos of what draws your attention. Sketch if you feel inspired, focusing on observing and collecting what you might return to later in the studio.

Pause midday for lunch at a riverside restaurant, where the air carries the scent of herbs and fresh bread, and the sound of flowing water mixes with laughter from nearby tables. Enjoy the pause and the chance to let the morning’s impressions settle before returning to your creative work.

In the afternoon, continue to Jardins de Quercy, a French botanical garden filled with winding paths and sculptural plantings that change with the light. Move slowly through the space and take reference photos of forms, textures, and natural compositions that speak to you. With your watercolors and ink in hand, experiment with capturing the textures and colors of the landscape before heading back to the venue.

Stop at a viewpoint overlooking the Aveyron Gorges on the drive back. The cliffs rise pale against the sky, and the river glints below in long curves of light.

Return to the estate with time to rest, continue painting outdoors, or flip through your sketches before sitting down to a three-course dinner served with wine or non-alcoholic options.

### Day 4: Classes at the venue
Enjoy a delicious breakfast, then settle into a morning session that kicks off with warm-up exercises and an insightful live demonstration from Leslie. The day's morning focus will be on value and creating depth in your work, discovering how light and shadow shape a scene to make your compositions more dynamic.

After lunch, shift your focus to atmospheric perspective. You'll spend the afternoon painting on the venue grounds or in the spacious studio, weather permitting. Leslie will guide you in discovering how subtle shifts in tone can make your plein-air work feel expansive, even on a small scale.

Before dinner, take time to review your favorite pieces and references, practicing everything you've studied so far. Over a three-course dinner prepared by your private chef and paired with local wine, share the day’s discoveries with your fellow artists as the evening settles over the countryside.

### Day 5: Trip to Cahors with a riverboat tour
After a wholesome breakfast, spend the morning at the venue preparing for the afternoon’s adventure. Leslie will guide you through quick painting exercises and color note techniques, sharpening your ability to capture a scene in just a few minutes. Practice building a reference photo library and translating fleeting impressions into watercolor and ink.

Following lunch, board the transfer for a half-day trip to the medieval city of Cahors. Glide along the Lot River on a guided riverboat tour, sketching medieval towers and the 14th-century Pont Valentré as they pass by. With your sketchbook and paints at the ready, capture quick color notes and reference photos from the water.

Head back to the venue for a three-course dinner prepared by your private chef and paired with local wine, a welcome chance to share stories and sketches from the afternoon’s adventure with your fellow artists.

### Day 6: Classes at the venue
Sit down to a filling breakfast, then head into a morning session dedicated entirely to personalized instruction.

Because every artist's journey is unique, Leslie will leave this time flexible to address whatever you and your fellow artists need most, whether that means revisiting a specific technique, overcoming a creative hurdle, or pushing your current pieces further.

After lunch, spend the afternoon applying these tailored insights while painting on the picturesque venue grounds. Take this time to continue developing your work from the week, bringing together the techniques and observations from the previous trips and studio sessions. The rest of the afternoon is yours to paint or simply relax by the pool.

Gather for a three-course dinner prepared by your private chef and paired with local wine. Close the day in good company, surrounded by the creative energy that has carried through every moment.

### Day 7: Classes at the venue
Savor a warm breakfast, then gather with Leslie and your fellow artists for another open morning of personalized instruction.

Use this time to revisit techniques from the week or push forward on paintings that have been developing throughout the retreat. Leslie will work with each artist individually, tailoring her guidance to what you need most based on the group's internal progress.

Enjoy a refreshing lunch before returning to the studio, prepared to celebrate!

In the afternoon, finish your favorite pieces and prepare for an informal mini-exhibition. Display your work and take a moment to appreciate how far you have come and celebrate the creative journey you have shared with your fellow artists. Take time to appreciate how your pieces connect and how your approach has shifted through the week.

A three-course farewell dinner with wine brings the retreat to a close, a last evening filled with laughter and the satisfaction of a week fully spent in creativity.

### Day 8: Departure
Enjoy breakfast with Leslie and your fellow artists, and get ready for your transfer to Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, Toulouse (TLS). Check-out is at 10:00 AM, and you'll arrive at the airport at around 11:30 AM.
