During this retreat, Ioana will walk you through her meticulous, observational approach to fine art drawing from the ground up, helping you master line, light, shadow, and texture to create striking, detailed pieces inspired by the architecture and nature around you.

Working closely with pen and ink, Ioana will demonstrate her own technique for breaking down complex scenes and subjects into confident, considered marks. You will develop your own artistic voice, moving beyond simply copying what's in front of you, and receive plenty of support from Ioana throughout the week.

The retreat is open to all levels of experience, though some prior experience with ink and pencil is recommended, as well as familiarity with Ioana's work.

Beyond the studio, explore the Loire Valley on two art trips that will fuel your creativity. Spend a full day at Château de Villandry, a grand country house known for its extraordinary contemporary garden design, and another half day in the medieval riverside town of Saumur, where you'll visit the impressive Château de Saumur and stop by the Les Chemins de la Rose, a botanical rose garden spanning over 10 acres, for a peaceful sketching session among thousands of blooms.

Indulge in delicious meals prepared by a private chef and under the supervision of the château's nutritionist. Taste authentic French flavors in a wine-tasting event with a top local sommelier native to the Loire Valley, and savor a selection of artisanal French cheeses in delightful cheese platters accompanying each dinner.

### Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Angers (St. Laud) train station with enough time to catch the 4:00 PM group transfer, arriving at the beautiful château by 5:00 PM.

Upon arrival, you will meet the lovely artist Ioana Pioaru, your instructor for the week, as well as your fellow creatives. After settling into your comfortable room, take part in a lovely orientation tour to get familiar with the impressive estate, including its picturesque gardens, serene woodlands, historic salon, and cozy library.

In the evening, join Ioana and the group for a special welcome dinner. Indulge in a delicious, three-course meal accompanied by a glass of aromatic French wine and delightful cheese platters.

### Day 2: Classes at the venue
Enjoy a hearty breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, then join Ioana and your fellow artists for a quick morning check-in with the venue hosts before settling into the art studio.

The morning class will start with some introductions from Ioana, presenting the outline of the course and what you will be learning throughout the week. Then, you will move on to exploring the venue grounds while bearing in mind what subjects you could draw. Ioana will teach you what to pay attention to, strengthening your observational skills and helping you see the world through an artistic lens.

After a leisurely lunch, continue the afternoon with another art workshop. During this class, Ioana will introduce you to the fundamentals of fine art drawing, such as shape, value, light, shadow, and texture. She will show you some examples of her work and propose some subjects for you to sketch on your own as she demonstrates her technique. Follow along on her demo and create your own fine art piece. You may step outside in the venue's expansive gardens and take inspiration from the nature that surrounds you, or stay indoors in the studio and work from a chosen reference photo.

As the class comes to an end, enjoy some spare time to unwind before dinner. Gather with Ioana and your fellow artists for a delightful three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and accompanied by a cheese board of fine French cheeses and a glass of local wine, sharing first impressions from the first full day at the retreat.

### Day 3: Art trip to Château de Villandry
After a generous breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, gather your art supplies and head out for a full-day trip to Château de Villandry, a grand country house in the heart of the Loire Valley, known for its spectacular gardens and avant-garde architecture.

Once the home of a noble family close to the French crown, the Château de Villandry has been shaped by centuries of history, culture, and transformations. Today, the gardens of the Château present a meticulous blend of geometry and bloom, showcasing seven different gardens in a contemporary design. Immerse yourself in the surrounding nature and practice your on-the-go sketching skills by taking part in a botanical sketching session.

Get inspired by the ripened Kitchen Garden, filled with all kinds of vegetables and fruit trees, or by the medicinal Herb Garden, where herbs such as rosemary, celery, mint, and oregano blend together in a symphony of aromas.

Take a break for lunch and enjoy a packed picnic meal from the venue, then spend the afternoon exploring the rest of the Château's grounds. Make quick sketches of any subject that catches your eye. Ioana will be there to help you and offer guidance if needed.

As the evening falls in, return to the venue and take some time to unwind before dinner. Gather with Ioana and your fellow artists for a chef-prepared dinner accompanied by a glass of local wine and a board of delightful French cheeses, sharing impressions and creative discoveries from today's exciting trip.

### Day 4: Classes at the venue
Fuel up with a delicious breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee, followed by a brief morning check-in with Ioana and the venue hosts, settling into the gentle rhythm of the day.

Step outside into the venue's vast gardens and take part in an outdoors sketching session. Take inspiration from the nature that surrounds you and put into practice the techniques you have learned so far, choosing a subject to sketch from the garden. Ioana will be there to guide you and offer support if needed.

After a delicious lunch, spend the afternoon translating your sketches from the morning into a bigger piece. Put into practice what you have learned from Ioana about light, shadow, and value. Play with shapes and textures as you progress in your artwork, crafting a beautiful story in fine ink lines and marks.

As the class comes to an end, take some time to recharge before dinner. Gather for a wholesome three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with a glass of local French wine and a board of fine French cheeses. Soak in the lovely atmosphere and lively conversations, and share impressions from another day full of drawing.

### Day 5: Art trip to Saumur & Les Chemins de la Rose gardens
Kick off the day with a hearty breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, then gather your art supplies and head out for another adventure on the retreat: a half-day trip to Les Chemins de la Rose botanical garden and to the medieval town of Saumur.

As you set off, the first stop is an iconic Rose Garden, “Les Chemins de la Rose,” that spans over 10 acres and boasts a large collection of roses. Located only a 5-minute drive from the venue, this natural haven is the perfect place to slow down, observe, and sketch. You will have plenty of time to wander the botanical garden and make some quick sketches before leaving for your next destination: the charming town of Saumur.

Once in Saumur, as you walk along this riverside town shaped by pale limestone, iron balconies, and steep rooftops, slow down and learn how to experience your surroundings through an artist's eye. Instead of trying to copy everything you see, Ioana will guide you on how to notice the way light and shadow shape a scene. As you explore the town, stop by the impressive Château de Saumur, a fortified castle that is now turned into a museum. Sketch if you feel inspired, or take reference photos, looking for intriguing shapes and patterns through an artistic lens.

Enjoy a packed lunch before returning to the venue, then dive into an afternoon session in the studio. This class will be all about composition. Look through the sketches and reference photos that you have gathered so far and choose one subject for your final piece. Start by making some quick thumbnail sketches to decide on your composition. Ioana will be there to guide you and offer help if needed.

In the late afternoon, take some time to reset before dinner. Sit down to a tasteful three-course dinner prepared by the in-house chef and paired with a glass of fragrant wine and French cheeses, sharing sketches from a morning spent painting in the Loire Valley.

### Day 6: Classes at the venue & wine-tasting event
Savor a warm breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee, followed by a quick morning check-in with Ioana and the venue hosts.

Spend the morning working on your final fine art piece. Experiment with different line work and marks, capturing your subject through the interplay between light and shadow. Ioana will be there to offer you feedback and guidance as you further develop your artwork.

After a relaxed lunch, continue the day with another afternoon session. Build up on the work from the morning, taking your time with each line and strengthening your technique as you capture your artistic vision on to the paper. Ioana will encourage you to notice how careful mark-making can tell a story without the aid of color.

As the afternoon winds down, enjoy some leisure time before dinner. Join Ioana and your fellow artists for a complimentary wine-tasting event at the château, led by a top local sommelier who spent six years working alongside chef Gordon Ramsay before returning to his native Loire. Sit down to a nourishing three-course dinner prepared by the private chef and paired with a glass of the Loire Valley’s celebrated regional wine and some local French cheeses, trading insights and impressions from the day.

### Day 7: Classes at the venue
Settle in with a filling breakfast and a steaming cup of coffee, followed by a brief morning check-in with Ioana and the venue hosts.

Spend the morning in the studio finishing your final piece, adding any last details and final touches. Ioana will be there to offer feedback and help you bring your artwork to its final state.

After a leisurely lunch, gather with Ioana and your fellow artists and prepare for a special event: a celebratory mini-exhibition of the works you created throughout the week, including your final fine art piece. Take this opportunity to share your artwork, exchange thoughts and impressions with Ioana and your fellow creatives, and celebrate the progress you've made together over the course of the retreat.

As evening falls, take some time to freshen up before dinner, then gather for one last farewell dinner prepared by the in-house chef and paired with aromatic wine, raising a glass to the artistic discoveries made and unforgettable memories!

### Day 8: Departure
Enjoy a final breakfast with Ioana and your fellow artists before it's time to part ways. Exchange any last contacts, then get ready for your 8:00 AM transfer to Angers (St. Laud) train station. You will arrive at the train station at around 9:00 AM.

**Do I have to pay a deposit?**

No. Once the number of guest reservations reaches the minimum number required for the retreat to become guaranteed, UpTrek charges the guests the cost of the retreat. Guests who reserved will be notified 48 hours in advance that their payment method on file is about to be charged.

**Will I receive a full refund if the retreat is not guaranteed?**

UpTrek does not charge the payment method we collect until the retreat becomes guaranteed. Once the retreat is guaranteed, there will be no reimbursement. Participants are required to purchase travel, medical, and cancellation insurance for protection against any circumstances that might require cancellation or change of travel arrangements.

**Will I receive a full refund if the guaranteed retreat is cancelled by the instructor or by UpTrek?**

If the retreat is canceled due to force majeure events or circumstances out of UpTrek's and/or the instructor's control, UpTrek will let you know as soon as possible, refund the total cost of the retreat, and help you find another option for your vacation.
