# Sam Boughton
*Contemporary landscape artist, art instructor*

Sam Boughton is a mixed-media landscape artist, instructor, and workshop leader based in the South West of England. She is known for her energetic, semi-abstract paintings inspired by coast and moorland and for her skilled handling of ink, pastel, and acrylic to capture the movement, light, and raw energy of wild places.

Having earned a BA and MA in Illustration, Sam has spent over 20 years drawing and painting the South West landscape. She is the winner of the Ronald Searle Award for Creativity and the 2020 Brownston Gallery Award and was long-listed for the Kate Greenaway Award. Her deep connection to remote, open landscapes, from the beaches of the Hebrides to the moors of Dartmoor, is a constant touchstone in her work, and her paintings and process have been featured in publications including Devon Life.

Sam is a widely respected workshop tutor, leading location-based and studio painting courses throughout the UK, including her recurring "Abstracting the Wild Coast" course at the Newlyn School of Art in Cornwall, workshops in the Scottish Highlands and Yorkshire, and a painting holiday on the island of Tresco in the Isles of Scilly. She also offers online instruction through her "Learn With Me" course series.

Her approach to teaching centers on observational, plein air drawing as the foundation of a personal visual language, encouraging students to move beyond the traditional horizon line, embrace spontaneous mark-making, and discover their own instinctive, abstract response to the landscape.
