# Kim Smith
*Contemporary fine art painter and art educator*

Kim Smith paints the small, easily-missed moments of daily life: a bouquet from the farmers market, a bird she notices outside her window, the ordinary warmth of her own kitchen. She turns all of these snippets into oil paintings built on bold color and confident, loose mark-making. Her habit of painting before sunrise, developed while raising a family and running a business, has grown into a near-daily practice, and it shows in the ease and looseness of her work. Trained originally in commercial art, she brings a certain structural clarity to her compositions, even as the paint itself stays loose, buttery and full of movement.

Teaching is as central to Kim's practice as painting is. She leads workshops and retreats across the US and abroad, and her focus is less on any single technique than on helping artists build the confidence to trust their own hand, and to keep going through the parts of a painting that don't yet look right, rather than giving up. She shares her process regularly with an online community of artists, and her underlying message is a simple one: creative time is worth carving out, even on a busy day, and progress and joy matter more than perfection.
