# Ioana Pioaru
*Contemporary fine arts artist and art teacher*

Ioana Pioaru is a Romanian-British artist and researcher based in West Sussex, UK, whose work spans traditional ink drawing and printmaking to 3D printing, virtual reality, and holography. Her practice explores the interplay between old and new, often capturing the quiet tension between heritage architecture and contemporary urban life through meticulous, richly detailed linework. Her drawings have been exhibited internationally in solo and group shows, including at Gallery 286 in London and AnnArt Gallery in Bucharest, and her work has received honorable mentions at the Awagami Print Biennale in Japan and was voted the public's favorite at the Print Biennale in Tartu, Estonia.

After earning her BA and MA in Fine Art Drawing from the National University of Arts in Bucharest, Ioana went on to complete a PhD at the University of Chester, researching the concept of artistic maximalism. Her doctoral research led her to develop an original technique that merges traditional hand-drawing with virtual reality and holography, bringing portraits of influential cultural figures and depictions of endangered species into the physical world as striking, one-of-a-kind holograms.

Alongside her studio and research practice, Ioana is a dedicated teacher known for guiding students through the fundamentals of ink drawing with patience and precision. She teaches internationally through Domestika, where her courses on architectural and botanical ink drawing have reached students across the globe, helping them build confidence with line, light, shadow, and detail.

Ioana believes that ink drawing is as much about observation and restraint as it is about technique. She helps students move past simply copying what they see, encouraging them to notice how light and shadow shape a scene and how careful mark-making can tell a story without the aid of color. Whether working with complete beginners or more advanced artists, Ioana creates a calm, structured environment where students can slow down, sharpen their eye, and develop a refined, expressive hand of their own.
