# Gustavo Ramos
*Portrait Artist and Educator*

Gustavo Ramos is an award-winning portrait artist and educator whose oil paintings are renowned for their jewel-like luminosity and psychological depth. Born in Maringá, Paraná, Brazil, he immigrated to Arizona at fifteen without speaking English, and the close observation of body language and facial expression that became his way of communicating shaped the foundation of his artistic practice. His portraits have been featured in The Atlantic, Artists Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine, and Fine Art Connoisseur, and his commissioned portrait of Pedro Albizu Campos is on permanent display at the Harvard Club of New York City.

Gustavo studied at Southern Virginia University, where he curated an independent curriculum centered on copying Old Master paintings and daily life drawing, with regular study visits to the National Gallery of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He attended the Florence Academy of Art on scholarship and apprenticed under classical realist painter Jeffrey Hein before establishing his own studio practice. He teaches his "Luminous Portraits" workshop at the Scottsdale Artists' School and internationally, and his online course on Domestika has brought his approach to portrait painting to a global audience.

His awards include the Royal Talens Year of Rembrandt International Contest (his winning work was displayed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam), the John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Foundation Fine Art Award (received three times), selection to the Portrait Society of America International Competition Select 50, and the Art Renewal Center Salon Staff Award. His work has been exhibited at Sotheby’s in New York, the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, Arcadia Contemporary in SoHo, and the Springville Museum of Art, which acquired one of his paintings for its permanent collection.

Gustavo lives and works in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2024 his painting “Winter” was included in the Lunar Codex, a time capsule of contemporary art launched to the Moon. His painting technique blends traditional methods with a contemporary artistic perspective, meeting each artist where they are and pushing them to see what oil paint can do at its highest level.
